I need help being a suck-up
Me | 01/20/2009 | Glenn

Posted on 01/20/2009 5:35:07 PM PST by Glenn

I need to suck-up to my boss.

He is a scotch drinker. I know nothing about scotch.

What can I purchase for him that will really impress him?

Does asking a decent question show weakness? I don't think so. Are you an expert on Scotch? Would you like to be? If you're a non-drinker or you really don't care about it, then this wouldn't be a good approach. If you'd like to know more about drinking Scotch and that's his drink, then he likely would share his opinion unless you are too much of a suck and it's obvious. If you do ask, listen more, talk less and see where it goes. You may learn quite a bit.

"I would recommend you don't buy him Scotch...but perhaps something closely related you might know something about"

Good point. Get some Drambuie.

Firstly, you want a ‘single malt’ scotch.

Oban and Laphroaig are two excellent ones. Oban is, I think the better of the two.

Good news - there are hundreds to sample before your an
expert.

Here’s a good webpage of a guy that knows much.....

No, Phillies. Go go too high-end with the Scotch. That’s too obvious; your boss and everyone else in the office will know you’re a butt-snorkeler.

Learn about single malt, vatted, blended and single grain scotches. Get a single or vatted malt Scotch somewhere from the middle - you can get a 15 year old bottle for around $60. Don’t get a blended Scotch like Dewar’s or you’ll get fired.

Macallan 25 year-old single malt is what you need, but it’s going to cost you.

Chivas Regal. If you go to a specialty place, they sell it with a velvet gift bag.

Sucking up to your boss will only lower your stock value in his perception.

My advice: keep your personal integrity.

Do a good job, be an exceptional employee, and if that isn’t good enough for him, then quit. He’ll regret it, I guarantee it.

You won’t.

Nothing. I just need to jockey for position.

you know you can get garottes on sale and eliminate the competition. Little riskier but you get to keep your self-respect.
