Newsweek’s Evan Thomas: Obama Is ‘Sort of God’

Newsweek editor Evan Thomas brought adulation over President Obama’s Cairo speech to a whole new level on Friday, declaring on MSNBC: "I mean in a way Obama’s standing above the country, above – above the world, he’s sort of God."

Thomas, appearing on Hardball with Chris Matthews, was reacting to a preceding monologue in which Matthews praised Obama’s speech: "I think the President's speech yesterday was the reason we Americans elected him. It was grand. It was positive. Hopeful...But what I liked about the President's speech in Cairo was that it showed a complete humility...The question now is whether the President we elected and spoke for us so grandly yesterday can carry out the great vision he gave us and to the world."

"So Obama’s had, really, a different task We're seen too often as the bad guys. And he – he has a very different job from – Reagan was all about America, and you talked about it. Obama is ‘we are above that now.’ We're not just parochial, we're not just chauvinistic, we're not just provincial."

Thomas elaborated on Obama as God, patronizingly explaining: "He's going to bring all different sides together...Obama is trying to sort of tamper everything down. He doesn't even use the word terror. He uses extremism. He's all about let us reason together...He's the teacher. He is going to say, ‘now, children, stop fighting and quarreling with each other.’ And he has a kind of a moral authority that he – he can – he can do that." In response, Matthews wondered: "If there's a world election between him and Osama Bin Laden, he's running a good campaign." Thomas agreed: "Yes, he is."

My question has always been the Big One: Who is behind him?

And while it is true that there are ideologues behind him, he is clearly possessed by a demon of his own and is a dangerous, wily, amoral creature. He is ruthlessly ambitious, something that has been obvious about him since the beginning, and is desperate (like all sociopaths) to construct an image of himself. Sociopaths have no “insides.” They have no values, no beliefs; they live by manipulating people into approving them and creating an image for them at the very same time that they are sucking all the resources and blood out of those very people.

The first time I saw Barry, he reminded me of the character in Six Degrees of Separation. That hasn’t changed. Rent the movie if you want to see something truly creepy.

He’s a construct of the MSM; a made for TV movie; a docudrama; a movie prop...an empty suit. Carefully packaged, given a teleprompter, special effects, and Hollywood backdrops the American public went for the bread and circus with wild abandon. Barakus Maximus, “all fame is fleeting, and glory short-lived.”

A highly manipulative person is not usually a puppet...but the puppeteer. I think Obama is pulling the strings.

Politicians hire experts in how to manipulate people. They may be experts themselves at the technique of manipulating public opinion.

But that's all at the tactical or operational level. What's going on in the big picture is harder to say. Politicians may be so caught up in managing polls and votes and elections that they don't know themselves.

I think they are revealing themselves as the marxists sympathizers that they truly are. They adore Obama because he represents what they believe – an authoritarian marxist, who is transforming America based on their shared ideology.

But in a way this is good, because we are seeing all those closeted American haters coming out, glowing and praising Obama to the hilt. The point is, when finally the American people open their collective eyes and see Obama for what he is, what little credibility the media has right now will be in the trash as well as all his adoring sycophants --we can only hope.
