Guns are beautiful (Pro 2nd Amendment - Check it out!)
New Times ^ | August 5th, 2009 | Edward F. Apalategui

I am a lifetime law-abiding gun owner and avid shooter. In my life I have had many occasions to buy firearms for sporting purposes. I have not had a need to own an AK-47 nor an opportunity to try one. I am told it is the finest assault rifle ever made. If I am in a situation wherein the AK-47 is the best choice, then I need to get one and I believe that I have that right guaranteed by the Second Amendment. Assuming that situation is in defense of my home or country, if an AK-47 makes the difference in my family’s survival, then so be it.

If I need an AK-47, then I would logically buy one now. When called to defense there will be no time to shop. I believe this is the logic that law-abiding people use when they buy assault rifles. I also believe this is the logic used in the writing of the Second Amendment. If ordinary citizens need to defend our nation at any level, then they not only need guns, they need the best. It is for this reason that bans are wrong: They are an infringement on our right to keep and bear arms.

Bans don’t work because Americans are among the few people in the history of the world to taste freedom. They love it and they defend it with their lives. Freedom needs boundaries, which are constantly tested.

Civil rights heroes were pushing these same boundaries and so were the moonshiners of prohibition and Proposition 8 demonstrators. We sometimes paint these individuals positively or negatively, but the spirit is the same. Therefore, building a modification of a banned gun (“What assault weapons ban?” July 16) is not a criminal act so long as the result is compliant. We often paint the individuals who do negatively, when we shouldn’t.

Regardless of the type of weapon, all people shot to death were killed by a person. No gun loads, aims, and discharges itself. No gun is mean, scary, or evil. No gun is a villain, but unfortunately some people are. The man who shot up that schoolyard with an AK-47 was a sick criminal. Other guns were used to stop him. Ask the parents of those kids if they would choose for a neighbor to have shot that guy in time to save their children. Ask them if they care what gun was used.

Guns are a beautiful part of this country. They won it, they defend it, and when bad people use them it takes good people with guns to stop them. These laws vilify heroes and manufacture felons where patriots once stood. They help no one except our enemies. Ban criminals, not guns.

As I said, I've got 'better' rifles. I've tricked out a couple civvy M-4's and I worked for 2 years putting together a tack driving no crap 900 yard National Match M1-A. They're beautiful in every sense of the word.

But as I said on the first posting of this I believe that beauty is when form follows function and there isn't a weapon on the planet that epitomizes that better than Sgt. Kalishnikov's design.

Yea, it could have some burled walnut furniture. Yea, it could have some fancy scrollwork. Nah.....who am I kidding. The beauty of the AK is its rugged utilitarian design, ease of manufacture, nearly flawless reliability, and absolutely unequalled man killing record.

I'm proud to own a few of them and I'm absolutely confident that I made the right choice to buy enough of them to equip my loved ones with them.

the 20# trigger pull on my 91/30 was like a safety, also the worst bolt action I’ve ever manipulated. I’m spoiled though having 5 SMLEs, which are butery smooth.

Don’t know my left from the right. Everything I mentioned is numbered from the left.

“worst bolt action”

Some carry a wooden mallet to clear a “sticky” bolt.

LOL

I’m still waiting on my CMP M1 Garand.

But my M1 Carbine will do until then.

Bingo! I've got an 1898 Lee-Enfield carbine, that's faster & smoother than any Krag I've ever handled...

;>)

I’ve heard all my life how British soldiers in 1914 were so skilled in manipulating the SMLE with its 70 degree rotation so fast that the Germans thought the Brits were equipped with automatic weapons.

I am relaxing in our hotel room after attending a day at the Grand American in Sparta, IL. For those who aren't familiar, it is THE trap shooting event of the year. There were just under 2,000 entries in the handicap event this afternoon. It is a sight to see. Approx. 3 1/4 miles of continuous shooters for 15 straight days totaling over 31,000 entries.

By the way; my kid (13 y/o) tied for first in his class and has a shoot-off to determine first or second tomorrow. Wooohoo! HUGE!

I’m Jealous! I ordered a service grade M1 back in May and a can of 06 ammo. Still waiting. Quite a backlog I understand. I got an Email from them last week. They said they were working on the April orders.

The AK is a good rifle. However, I think the M14 is a superior weapon. Same caliber (7.62mm), but the M14 has a larger case, and more ooomph.

What are the weapons #1 and 2 from the left? One looks like a Bushmaster and the other a Colt? Is that an 1899 winchester shotgun in the mix?

Nice arsenal.

Nice. And notice that none of those "evil" firearms are spontaneously jumping up and shooting the little girl? If you listen to the would-be gun-grabbers, they'd have you think that routinely happens.

I'm jealous of the pistol-grip shotgun on the far right. Is that a Mossberg? I'm seriously thinking of a 500 "Tactical Cruiser" - pistol grip only, 18 1/2 barrel... Lots of intimidation factor.
