Confessions of a Pistachio Nut Addict
Canada Free Press ^ | August 25, 2009 | P.J. Gladnick

I have a confession to make.

I was once an addict.

For three years of my life I was a pistachio nut junkie.

It started out innocently enough, it always does. Just a few pistachio nuts can’t hurt me, I told myself. How wrong I was. A few nuts led to a few more and then even more until I was irreversibly hooked.

I wasted my days away popping those little red devils in my room. My habit was insatiable. I had no scruples when it came to filling my habit. I even stooped to lying to my own family. I would borrow money from my mother telling her it was for booze and cigarettes and then I would run out to buy a bag of pistachio nuts instead.

I once dated a girl (partially) because she would bring me pistachios from her parents’ grocery store.

The best pistachios are from Iran. They are smaller than those from California, but have a more subtle flavor that is more appealing to the palate. I have been able to get them only in middle eastern markets.

Cashews?

I love them even though I once had a violent allergic reaction to cashews. We owned a cashew tree in Puerto Rico. Well we roasted the nuts and ate them. What I didn't know is that you are supposed to toss the cashews in ashes in order to draw out the oil. What happened is that my face blew up to about double its normal size or so it seemed. It lasted a few days and I had to cover my face in lotion.

I think my Dad was addicted to peanuts. He would buy 5 pound bags of shelled raw peanuts. My parents had a very large garden that he planted half in peanuts. He loved raw peanuts, green peanuts, boiled peanuts, roasted peanuts, peanut brittle, peanut butter, Planters peanuts,

I gotta go get me some peanuts.

Here, I’ll cure you of this nonsense: 53% of world pistachio production is from IRAN. Feel better?
