As long as they are bankers and businessmen. Read "Hamilton's Curse" by Thomas DiLorenzo and have your eyes opened about Hamilton. One of the best books I've read in awhile.

"Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.

What we obtain too cheaply, we esteem too lightly; 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.

The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind. Where, say some, is the king of America? I'll tell you, friend, He reigns above.

Yet that we may not appear to be defective even in earthly honors, let a day be solmenly set apart for proclaiming the charter; let it be placed in the divine law, the Word of God; let a crown be placed thereon.

The Almighty implanted in us these inextinguishable feelings for good and wise purposes. They are the guardians of His image in our heart. They distinguish us from the herd of common animals."

The above is from an essay written by Thomas Paine issued December 23, 1776 and was read aloud to the Colonial Army at Valley Forge by order of General Washington.

Ah yes. The Right Reverend Thomas Paine whose sermons were omitted from Common Sense--and thankfully so.

“We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We’ve staked the future of all our political institutions upon our capacity…to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” ……James Madison [1778 to the General Assembly of the State of Virginia]

In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress. (John Adams)

“I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth — that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the Ground without his Notice, is it probable that an Empire can rise without his Aid?”

—Benjamin Franklin, to Colleagues at the Constitutional Convention

Do you have a source for the Madison quote? Snopes contends it's bogus.

Do you have a source for the Madison quote? Snopes contends it's bogus.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/capital.asp

The thing to remember is that snopes is a liberal website and will lie when needed to deny the truth. On matters of political import they are totally unreliable

“We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We’ve staked the future of all our political institutions upon our capacity…to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments of God.” ……James Madison [1778 to the General Assembly of the State of Virginia]

While this statement cannot be authoritatively confirmed as from Madison, it can also not be authoritatively rejected.

Snopes uses Madison's stance on separation of church and state as proof, however, the statement as written does NOT propose any official state church. It simply says that a private commitment to follow God's law is essential to the function of all our political institutions.

This lines up well with his move to accept Benjamin Franklins call to prayer at the Constitutional Convention in 1787.

It also lines up with his comments to the 1785 session of the General Assmebly of the State of Virginia on why he was opposed to establishment of religion by law (it is a freedom that should not be forced or restrained).

President Madison was a Christian man and the statement lines up perfectly with his beliefs (as I know them from his quotes I have access to)

“A people unwilling to use extreme violent force to preserve or obtain their liberty deserves the tyrants that rule them.” I think Jefferson.

“Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those who don’t.”
