The most pretentious science fiction - fantasy TV shows
November 2, 2009

Posted on 11/02/2009 3:09:41 PM PST by EveningStar

Here are my selections for the most pretentious science fiction - fantasy TV shows (RELAX - THE CYNICISM IS ALL IN FUN!):

5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997 - 2003) - Pretty much a chick series.

4. V (original - including miniseries' - 1983 - 1985) - Nazi lizard people invade the earth.

3. Alien Nation (1989 - 1990) - A message series with one message - racism is evil. We get it. Next. (amazingly enough, this series spawned five made for TV movies, which were viewed by all 500 of its fans)

2. Beauty and the Beast (1987 - 1990) - Nauseatingly sappy

1. Babylon 5 (1993 - 1998) - Yeah, I know that "true science fiction fans" like this series because J. Michael Straczynski is a fan of literary SF - and named a Psi Cop "Alfred Bester." Big deal.

I never saw the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, but from what I've read about it, it definitely would have made my list.

OK. Those are my picks. How about yours?

DS9 was the best of the series IMHO!

I agree. I've been an Avery Brooks fan since "Spenser For Hire."

I liked B5. A LOT.
Other than the asinine ‘Diversity is our Strength” message, it was pretty grand.

Dresden Files being canceled was final proof that Sci-Fi had no interest in really promoting good Science Fiction-Fantasy TV

They were better off showing old reruns of Lost in Space and Space:1999 15 years ago than they are today with "The Anaconda That Ate (insert city here)" movies of the month.

Cancelling "Space: Above and Beyond" and turning down "FlashForward" were also bonehead moves.

Dunno. Stargate Universe seems to be pretty good.

But you’re right. The Dresden Files were great. I wish “Bob” had stayed a skull rather than a guy, but substituting an ancient jeep for a the Blue Beetle was genius!

I vote that “Earth 2” is environmentalist mantra AND man bashing AND “corporations are bad”.

Everything in the Star Trek franchise since 1986. Except for the 2009 movie.

I agree with you there. They got WAY self-important. Was I the only one who thought the idea of a British Shakespearean actor playing a French starship captain who'd surrender the ship to a lifeboat and everyone was acting like he was the most brilliant starship captain the the whole universe was stupid?

Jonathan Frakes is the worst actor in the history of the world. He couldn't act dead if you shot him. I think part of my problem with the show was that Frakes was supposed to be a "leader-commander" but came across as an out of his depth jerk who couldn't make a decision and used his authority to push people around.

As far as pretentiousness, Star Trek was the most pretentious ever. Star Wars, for the first two episodes, was fun. The entire series went over a cliff right after they rescued Hans Solo from Jabba.

If you have the complete series & movies, plus the few episodes of Crusade - put the in time order and they make more sense. But were so many lose ends which were just glossed over in a quick dialogue. The are apparently books which tie those lose ends up.

Studios, networks which make these series - like Defying Gravity, really suck when it comes to making the original ideas work, usually canceling or cutting funding. Then they move on to more profitable and arguably brain dead sitcoms and the like, is it any wonder a lot of people have just turned their TVs off?

Agreed. If I'd remembered them, I'd have put them on my list, along with several other suggestions on this thread. :)

The movie was barely tolerable until he shows he was a member of the 8 gang. Then it goes from post-apocalyptic to environmentalist wacko.

Absolutely. They made Picard and the STNG gang look like privateers.
