The American Minute - March 12, 2010 - Juliette Low - Founder of the Girl Scouts
The American Minute website ^ | March 12, 2010 | William J. Federer

Posted on 3/12/2010, 10:15:04 AM by Freedom'sWorthIt

Juliette Low began the Girls Scouts, MARCH 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia. Chronic ear infections as a child made one ear deaf. A grain of rice thrown at her wedding lodged in her other ear, which was punctured by the procedure to remove it.

Juliette Low's father, a U.S. Army General, was previously a Civil War Confederate captain. In the Spanish-American War, Juliette Low and her mother organized a convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers returning from Cuba.

After her husband's death in 1905, Juliette Low traveled to England where in 1911 she met Boer War hero Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts. They were engaged to be married, but the wedding was cancelled.

Returning to America, Juliette Low founded Girl Guides. Dying of breast cancer in 1927, she was buried in her uniform.

The Girl Scout oath was "On my honor, I will try: to do my duty to God and my country, to help other people at all times, to obey the Girl Scout laws."

In 1995, Patti Garibay, a former Girl Scout leader, founded the family-friendly American Heritage Girls, serving thousands of girls with troops in over 32 states. The American Heritage Girls' Oath is "I promise to love God, Cherish my family, Honor my country, and Serve in my community."

Good morning to all! Willam Federer posts another bit of American history - commemorating this particular date.

Today is about Juliette Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts.

Any other Girl Scouts out there?

Yours truly was a Brownie Scout whose greatest achievement was stitching a "sit-upon"....! LOL.

Hope you will ping at least one other person to this thread today.

God bless!

I am proud to say that I was a Girl Scout from Brownies in the third grade through Seniors when I graduated high school in 1972. I made First Class Scout when I was in the 8th Grade, 1968. I traveled to see the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low and I went on a Wider Opportunity out to Long Beach “Aboard the Queen Mary!”

Oh - wow - you are of my own era!

I regret that I did not pursue the Girl Scouts as so many did. (Had a long history of starting a lot of things and finishing none....)

You went aboard the Queen Mary? Or is that just a term - that’s why it’s in quotes.

Do you still have your sash with your badges?

The Girl Scouts are just a tremendous organization! So glad to learn this information about its founder!

Read post 36 on that thread - repeated here - not all Girl Scouts have gone in that horrible direction!!!

Each Troop is its own entity - still doing good things for the girls and for their communities!

“I am a GS co-leader and all I can say is that what the children are taught and exposed to really depends on each troop and the leader/leaders of that troop.

I personally think it would be a shame to dismiss every Girl Scout troop based on the actions of some. If my children (both in scouts for years) were exposed and taught any of that crap, I’d rank them out in a nano-second. But the girls have been been busy attending their meetings at a local church that sponsors them, collecting food and funding for a local crisis center, participating in community cleanups and we intend to send a supply of donated cookies to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hopefully, we’ll have enough raised to also give the girls a nice little party at the end of the year. No doubt, they are exposed to much worse at their local public schools.

So the next time you see a little Girl Scout helping in their community or selling Girl Scout cookies, instead of assuming the worst, why don’t you ask them (or their leaders) what they are supporting and what they are learning. One of the interesting things about Girl Scouts is that the girls are the ones that get to decide who and what groups they support with their fund raising. As leaders, we can offer suggestions but the girls have to make the final call. ;) Not some yahoos in New York or wherever. “

It is like in many of the mainline Protestant Denominations in the US (like Presbyterian Church USA).

The HEIRARCHY in the PCUSA has gone wacko, apostate, Gaia worship, Shaman leading, crazy. However, the Christians in the pews of their churches are, for the most part, Bible Believing, Born again, Holy Spirit led believers!!!!

I believe God is purifying and restoring all the organizatoins that name His name in their heritage...perhaps this will include even the American Girl Scouts in their headquarters.

(The article you linked to however was specifically about the World Girl Scouts - not the American GS).

But the post above shows that the Girl Scout Troops are, by and large, still fulfilling the vision of their founder, Juliette Low. Thank God!

I do have my sash and my badges. That was a keeper. The Wider Opportunity was called Aboard the Queen Mary and GS from across the US and 6 Guides from England went to Long Beach for 2 weeks of oceanography experiences. This was just after the Queen Mary was moved to Long Beach and wasn’t really open to the public. We were supposed to live aboard there, but it wasn’t ready so we stayed in a hotel nearby. Some of our classes were there, some were at Laguna Beach, we toured the San Onofri nuclear facility and a naval base. We also went to Sea World. I think the highlight for me though was hearing a lecture from Jacque Cousteau’s son (he was really cute!).

It wasn’t cool to be a Girl Scout but I enjoyed it. Most of the summers from 1964 - 1968 I went to summer camp, too, at Camp Concharty. Great times.

In 2004 my mom died and I began to sort through family things. I think we have a first edition Girl Scout handbook published around 1921 or 22. I’d be surprised if one was developed and published much earlier than that. I could be wrong.

Oh - thanks for that added info!

I did not keep my brownies sash into adulthood - and am so sorry I didn’t!

Glad you did!

And, wow, an original Girl Scouts Handbook???

I am sure that is worth a great deal of $$ - have you ever tried to find out what it is worth - not that you would want to sell it - but if that program “Antiques Roadshow” ever comes to your area - you might want to take that in and get it valued!

How neat that your mom was also a Girl Scout?

Very nice!

The women in my mom’s family were all Girl Scouts. It was expected, sort of civic responsibility! I have my pins and everything.

OH wow - how very nice!

I would give much to have my Brownie pin again!

You are very blessed to have all that! And your memories.

Knew a woman of my era who became very active as a leader in the Girl Scouts locally and in our state (NC). She never had children of her own but gave much of her joyous life to these girls and all these wonderful activities and camps of the Girl Scouts of our area (Wake County, NC) and of our state.

What a great way for a woman to invest their life. What blessings come down - through the generations even - from all the good things around the Girl Scouts!

Thanking God for all the women in your family who were in the Girl Scouts - what a heritage they and you have left!

I saw Juliet Low’s birthplace in Savannah, GA. I was a proud Brownie and then an even prouder Girl Scout all of my childhood years. What a wonderful organization it was, and I have nothing but fond memories of my time in the Scouts.

I learned so much from that organization, patriotism, poise, self-confidence, loyalty, friendship, the list goes on and on.

You, of course, had the GS promise correct. I want to add the slogan and the motto: “Do a good turn daily” and “Be prepared.” I’ve especially appreciated the lesson of being prepared. Always think ahead and plan for contingencies.

I forgot to add that my mom was a Girl Scout troop leader. I learned so much as a Brownie/Scout and all my little friends in my neighborhood were all in the troop too. It was so much fun as a kid and it was fun to earn one’s badges. Very occasionally you would find a kid who was a member of the Bluebird/Campfire Girls. They were few and far between in the neighborhood of my youth, but they did exist as an alternative organization to the Brownie/Girl Scouts.

It was my first introduction to spanish moss and was an in-depth study of antebellum architecture. It was an embarassment to the Gordon family that Sherman knew them, but it was in large part due to the relationship between the Gordons and Sherman that he didn’t burn and pillage like he did the rest of Georgia.

Did you ever make those buddy burners and something logs which were torn newspaper, rolled up, tied with string and coated in parafin? I have started more fires in the worst rains with those things. I still try to keep some around.
