Beheaded Vikings found at Olympic site

London, England (CNN) -- They were 51 young men who met a grisly death far from home, their heads chopped off and their bodies thrown into a mass grave.

Their resting place was unknown until last year, when workers excavating for a road near the London 2012 Olympic sailing venue in Weymouth, England, unearthed the grave. But questions remained about who the men were, how long they had been there and why they had been decapitated.

On Friday, officials revealed that analysis of the men's teeth shows they were Vikings, executed with sharp blows to the head around a thousand years ago. They were killed during the Dark Ages, when Vikings frequently invaded the region.

"To find out that the young men executed were Vikings is a thrilling development," said David Score, project manager for Oxford Archaeology, which excavated the remains. "Any mass grave is a relatively rare find, but to find one on this scale, from this period of history, is extremely unusual and presents an incredible opportunity to learn more about what is happening in Dorset at this time."

Radiocarbon dating had already placed the remains between A.D. 890 and 1030, before the Norman conquest of Anglo-Saxon England.

I don’t see it that way. norsemen were northmen...which were men north of whomever gave them the name “norse”. It could’ve been people from paris if people from lyon gave them that name.

"So the Normans were French and not Vikings!"

You were closer than you realise! The Normans were Normans - who came from Normandy. Nominally French, but genetically different. Go to Normandy today and you will see place names that owe very little to the french language. Every modern European country is made up of many sub-countries which still maintain their independant ways. It's a bit like fractals - when you think you have understood it, you find there are more layers within layers within layers.

Probably you have, you just didnt’ recognize it as such. People with a typical nose stud will sometimes decide to upgrade. the nose stud is replaced with ever larger diameter “bolts” untill they can insert a saucer. they don’t use the open hoop style spools like in the ears...for cosmetic reasons. you don’t want to look into a person’s sinuses and see where nose hairs originate.

Elementary school for me was in the 1950’s... so Devo would have looked pretty weird to me at that time too.

Red heads run in my Irish family. My father was a red head as a kid, when he started turning grey, his hair came in pink....that's when he started to shave his head...sometime in his 60's...He said his father had pink hair as an old man also....

Dad was visiting one time and sat next to the kitchen window. He had forgotten to shave his head for a couple of days and I saw this pink halo and told him I now believe he has pink hair....he cussed and said he forgot to shave his head for a couple of days...

Forgive me for my lack of details, it has been a lot of years since my last World History class. But Norsemen is another name for the Vikings. The Norsemen conquered the area we now call Normandy. This is historical fact.

OK, I am blonde, Norwegian(-German) but I definitely carry that gene, front and center. Our friend, a Norski, does too, as does our son. All blondes. My husband, a blond Icelandic sort, does not.

Interesting theory tho, and I suspect there is truth in it.

When we were in Northumbria, the B&B owner looked exactly like my large-boned Norwegian grandfather. I know the Vikings landed right there.

Maybe they were from a very earlym previously unknown civilization. They were members of their congress who pushed an unwanted health bill upon their population using bizarre parliamentary maneuvers. Just maybe.

So the Normans were French and not Vikings!

So what does that make Favre? An ex-Viking with a French name? Ach du liebe!!!

It's possible these studies haven't yet caught up to anthropologists though.

Give those anthropologists a break. They're resting after exerting themselves over the last study they produced. You might of heard about it this week, it was in all the papers:

Women live longer, but men outsex women.

HA! The strontium isotope location tracing isn't my idea, although I am very flattered that you think so. But it is a fairly well known and proven tool, useful to archeologists and forensic anthropologists. Meat would contain the same isotope signature as the area where it was raised. But it is my understanding a great deal of the strontium we have in our bodies comes from the water we drink. Somehow I doubt your Vikings, however manly, were drinking sea water.

"Strontium levels vary across the world, and in some areas, are distinctive to specific smaller regions. Strontium levels vary in nature, and end up in humans who reside in the region.

"The fact that the human has a similar isotopic signature to strontium levels of a geographic location means that person very likely was born or lived in that area for a length of time and was exposed to the strontium there. Strontium adheres to bones and teeth given its likeness to calcium.

"As a result, the bones found at an excavation site may be taken to a laboratory and analyzed for strontium levels. The area this person lived in for a long time may be discernible, although not all of the time. This information may help in identifying someone as a longtime resident (or conversely, as a transient or visitor)."

At one time, the British knew how to deal with foreign invaders. Today, they put them on the dole.

The Lion of Brittania is now a Mouse.
