National Trust image by Rob Collins

The UK National Trust is warning of a 2-4C rise in summer temperatures by the end of the century.  They envision English gardens full of palm trees, Bougainvillea and tropical fruit, as seen above.

The apple orchards have been replaced with orange groves, the turf covered over with gravel and the summer borders replanted with cacti. They may look like scenes from a Portugese holiday, but these images could be the future of the traditional English garden, plant experts claimed yesterday.  The striking images are part of a National Trust campaign to highlight how gardens will look if global warming brings Mediterranean weather to Britain in the next few decades.

And Met Office Climate models expect most of the northern hemisphere to turn red hot, particularly the Arctic which they expect to warm up by more than 16C in the next ninety years.

In the real UK (the one that exists outside the Met Office Supercomputers) the last three summers have all been complete washouts, the last two winters have been bitter cold, and over the last eighty years, summertime temperatures have risen only 0.5C.

Graph generated from Met Office UK temperature data

Most of the observed 0.5C rise has likely been due to UHI effects, as the UK population has increased by 50% since 1930.  Many people in England would prefer to see the tropical paradise which the National Trust promises, but in the meantime they will just have to live with the usual UK rain.  However, it is commendable that the National Trust employs top notch artists with an active imagination.

L.A.’s Carbon Surcharge [Greg Pollowitz]

Friday, March 26, 2010

Al Gore praises Los Angeles's economy-killing energy tax in green-jobs Newspeak. LAist.com:

As expected, former Vice President Al Gore praised Mayor Villaraigosa for his carbon surcharge, which would, in part, move Los Angeles to be using 20% renewable energy by the end of this year. The plan, which the Mayor says will only increase bills a few bucks for the majority of residents, was approved by the Board of Water and Power Commission last week.

“The Carbon Reduction Surcharge is one of the most forward-thinking clean energy plans I have ever seen,” said former Vice President Gore via satellite from his home in Nashville. “Not only does it create a trust fund to invest in clean, green energy, but it will also create jobs and kick-start the green economy in LA. I hope the Los Angeles City Council supports this Carbon Reduction proposal. Los Angeles' efforts and the Mayor's leadership in fighting for and investing in America’s clean energy future should be applauded.”

The City Council, however, voted to assert jurisdiction over the matter, a move based on law that enables them to either approve or deny — note, they cannot amend the surcharge plan — decisions by the Board of Water & Power Commission. Before the council discussed asserted jurisdiction on Tuesday, Villaraigosa's office sent a memo to councilmembers outlining what denying could mean for the city. Basically, bankruptcy.

Council President Eric Garcetti, who supports clean energy, responded with strong words, calling the memo "a gun to our head." "Some of the language we received in a briefing is clumsy and condescending. Don't tell us that the quickest that we're going to go bankrupt is to turn this away." But he also warned against myths, such as the surcharge being a raise for overpaid workers. "That's a lie," he stated, continuing to outline the surchage's other purposes. "This is about more than just clean energy, it's also about making sure we have a financially strong utility." Approving the surchage would help the LADWP's bond rating.

Here's a photo from the announcement. Orwellian:

Tropical England? Somehow, “Surf’s up, Dude!” just doesn’t sound right with a British accent. Is it just me?

Well England will be saved by Obama, because he will ruin our economy to the point the most energy we’ll be able to muster is from rubbing two sticks together!

Meanwhile as the reality sets in the good folks across the pond mostly likely are reflecting on what a reasonable price to purchase snow shoes from elsewhere may be. They are going to start to freeze their butts off for a long time by all indications. And if the Iceland volcano group really goes boom... they are not going to like big Al Gore and the IPPC very much in the near future. Perhaps the French as they no longer can prance about nude on their southern beaches due to the cold summers will decide it is time to demand Al Bore be brought forth to a existing gallows.

Idiots! The west coasts of England and Scotland already have tons of palm trees! (Because of the Gulf Stream.)
