Yup, tonight was a non event, jupiter probably, like I said, seen it before. Having said that, the reason I didn’t get too excited was becuase I have witnessed a lot stranger beyond explanation events. I don’t spend near as much time outside at night as I did in my younger years.about 30 years ago me, my exwife, sister and brotherinlaw witnessed a craft not much higher than treetop level, at dusk but not dark. All 4 of us stared at it for several minutes before it sped off, none of us reported it either, and it wasn’t a plane or helicopter or some kind of balloon. But since that day, I don’t discount anything as to what somebody says they saw.

Look at it through some binoculars and see if there are any little ‘white dots’ around it. Those would be its moons.

In our dark location last Monday or Tuesday, looking at Jupiter, we and a friend could see Ganymede (~ 4.7 mag) naked eye. He and my wife could also make out Calisto (~ 4.9 mag), but none of us could see Uranus (~ 5.8 mag.). Had to block out the full moon.

Binoculars and Stellarium confirmed what we were looking at

"but none of us could see Uranus"

I haven't been able to see it either. I'm convinced Uranus doesn't exist. It's a myth! :p

I like Stellarium. It has helped me answer a lot of the grandkids' questions as well, with the right answer. ("What is that, Papa?")

Instead of guessing at Jupiter, download & install Stellarium. It’s free, and surprisingly good, planitarium program. You can set it for your own exact location.

Loads fast, easy to use (even I can do it!) customizable, and goes to the current time/location on startup.

You can use it prior to going out, so you’ll know where to find what you want to look at; or after the fact, to see if there is a is a star or planet where you saw something like this light of yours.
