I saw a note slide across the #TCOT feed on Twitter last night that mentioned Michelle Obama had no law license. This struck me as odd, since (a) she went to school to be a lawyer, and (b) she just recently held a position with the University of Chicago Hospitals as legal counsel — and that’s a pretty hard job to qualify for without a law license.
But being a licensed professional myself, i knew that every state not only requires licensure, they make it possible to check online the status of any licensed professional. So I did, and here’s the results from theARDC Website:
She “voluntarily surrendered” her license in 1993. Let me explain what that means. A “Voluntary Surrender” is not something where you decide “Gee, a license is not really something i need anymore, is it?” and forget to renew your license. No, a “Voluntary Surrender” is something you do when you’ve been accused of something, and you ‘voluntarily surrender” your license about five seconds before the state suspends (or disbars) you.
Here’s an illustration: I’m a nurse. At various times in my 28 years of nursing I’ve done other things when I got burned out; most notably a few years as a limousine driver; even an Amway salesman at one point. I always, always renewed my nursing license — simply becuase it’s easier to send the state $49.00 a month than to pay the $200, take a test, wate six weeks, etc., etc. . . I’ve worked (recently) in a Nursing Home where there was an 88 year old lawyer and a 95 year old physician. Both of them still had current licensures as well. They would never DREAM of letting their licenses lapse. I happen to know there is currently in the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City Indiana an inmate who is a licensed physician, convicted of murder when he chased the two burlars who entered his home and terrorized his family into the street and killed them. (And I can’t say i blame him for that, either.) This phisican still has an active medical license and still sees patients, writes prescriptions, etc all from inside the prison.
And he renews his medical licese every two years, too.
I tried looking up why she would “Voluntarily surrender” her licese, but Illinois does not have it’s 1993 records online.
But when I searched for “Obama”, I found this:
“Voluntarily retired” — what does that mean? Bill Clinton hung onto his law license until he was convicted of making a false statement in the Lewinsky case and had to “Voluntarily Surrender” his license too.
This is the former editor of the Harvard Law Review who doesn’t seem to give a crap about his law license.
Something else odd; while the Search feature brings up the names, any seaches for the Disciplinary actions ends quicky.
As in, Too Quickly. Less than a half-second quickly on a Search Engine that can take five seconds to Search for anything.
As in, “there’s a block on that information” kind of thing.
So we have the first Lawyer President and First Lady — who don’t actually have licenses to practice law.

Michelle Obama has been described as a “distinguished attorney” despite the fact that Michelle Obama has been “inactive” since 1993.
Michelle has been on court ordered inactive status with the Illinois State Attorneys bar from 1993, after only 4 years of practicing law. What did she do?
This Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission (ARDC) suspension is for discipline reasons...not for those volunteering to stop practicing. It is COURT ORDERED...not “Michelle Obama ordered.” Their website is very clear about their function and why they step in.
An attorney, points out, “sounds more to me like she was drummed right out of the practice of law. I am just dying to know what she did... she ran to have a court ordered inactive status done...and then no malpractice report needed to be provided.
She wanted this to “go away” fast and furious and the details not come out in depositions, courtroom documents, rulings for the client/plaintiffs...etc..
The ARDC is the agency of the Supreme Court of Illinois which registers attorneys and investigates complaints of misconduct filed against attorneys holding a license to practice law in Illinois.
Their principal purpose is to assist the Supreme Court to determine a lawyer’s fitness to practice law in Illinois. If a complaint is made that an attorney, licensed to practice law in Illinois, has engaged in illegal, unethical or dishonest conduct, they will investigate and, if warranted, bring formal disciplinary charges. The Supreme Court of Illinois will then ultimately decide if a lawyer should be censured (publicly rebuked), suspended (having the law license to practice either taken away for a certain period of time or placed on a probationary period) or disbarred (having the law license taken away indefinitely).
The ARDC cannot impose fines, imprison, obtain monetary damages, enforce remedies between the lawyer and client, or seek civil or criminal relief against a lawyer as part of the disciplinary process. They can affect only the lawyer’s ability to practice law in Illinois.
They are not funded by taxpayers’ money. They are funded entirely by the annual registration fees paid by attorneys authorized to practice law in Illinois.

Everyone in the law school gets to be editor for a very short stint.

Two and a half years ago a fellow poster at the Texas Darling blog managed to access the files index, probably the ARDC mentioned in the article, and discovered that Michelle's file had a reference number indicating ‘insurance fraud’. Rather than lose her license she, perhaps, surrendered it voluntarily? Who knows!
As to Barak Obama, I suspect it's something along the lines of he just didn't want to be bothered with a law license, renewal, and all that. Hell — anyone seriously think this guy is going to earn a living as a lawyer? That takes effort.

Both Obama's have law licenses. Both have voluntarily had their licenses put in an inactive status. This is not uncommon for attorneys who are working in positions where they are not practicing law because it means they don't have to keep up with the continuing legal education requirements. Unlike Clinton, their licenses were not taken away from them, they were not disbarred or suspended. This issue has been covered over and over again. There are a whole lot of things to be critical of both Obama's over but this isn't one of them.
Someone in Chicago’s legal circles has to know what happened. Maybe now that Zero is not so popular, they’ll come forward, tell their story and make a ton of money.

I understand that both law license cases are kept secret - that is, both Obama’s are hiding the reason their law licenses were pulled.
