Who was the last "coolest man in America"?
Fee Republic ^ | 1/29/2011 | Krankor

There was a time, maybe thirty or forty years ago, before cable TV and cell phones, where one man could be so impressive in his accomplishments and force of personality, he would almost universally be recognized as the coolest man in America. His field could range from medicine, science, sports, politics or entertainment. Since the advent of the internet, though, this is no longer possible. Who, in your opinion, was the last "coolest man in America"?

Well, Namath had the cool factor, in spades.

No doubt the men you mentioned should be lauded for the time spent serving in the armed forced, but why is it “even better” if some actor did what millions of regular guys did?

Geeze, you are right. I completely forgot about Ted Williams. I gotta put him in as my number one now...over a two way tie for my 2 original picks here, Dean Martin and Lee Marvin.

They point is that they weren’t just actors as you stated. You seemed unclear on that.

Namath was just a ball player. BFD.

At least Krankor has had ONE person agree out of 300 posts.

One of the coolest guys ever was Ty Cobb. He held more records than any other player, ever. He batted over .400 three times, had the highest lifetime batting average ever.

Casey Stengel said “Cobb was the best ever, no one else was even close”. Cobb beat up some of the toughest guys in baseball including an ump who outweighed him by 40 pounds.

Ty also served in WWI and was wounded, well I guess being gassed counts as wounded.

Most of his records which were eventually broken were done so in many more games.

One of the more interesting honors was that Pete Rose named his Son “Ty”.

I’m stunned that it took 80 some posts before John Wayne’s name came up.

Wow

Actually, and this may give it away, Reynolds was the number two coolest man in America at the time.

Dom Deluise?

Love it! Copying this for my son. Apparently “Chuck Norris sayings” are a popular thing among the teens :)

I wonder if you have any idea of the meaning of cool or hot. Elvis was hot; Sinatra cool.

What year was it that Joe Namath sold out his coolness and wore pantyhose for a “leggs” commercial?
Steve McQueen or John Wayne would never have done that!
