Former Dallas Cowboys running back Ron Springs, who spent the past four years in a coma after losing oxygen during a 2007 operation, has died without ever regaining consciousness. He was 54.

Former Cowboys teammate Everson Walls, who donated a kidney to Springs for a transplant, says the Springs family informed him that his friend died about 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Medical City Dallas hospital.

Yep. His son Shawn also played for the Buckeyes. Prayers go out to Shawn and the rest of the family.

Wow. How sad. I did not know he had not recovered. How terrible for the family. Springs was one of those terrific “do-everything” backs who wasn’t the star that Dorsett was, but is necessary for a winning team.

Springs gets a life saving kidney from Everson Walls but dies of complications in surgery for removal of forearm cyst. What irony! RIP son.

Sad news indeed. Condolences to the Springs family from this Giants fan.

I don't remember much from his playing days, but I know he's got a place in NFL history -- in a very bizarre way. When Tony Dorsett set a record in a 1983 game with the longest run from scrimmage in NFL history (99 yards), the Cowboys only had ten players on the field. Fullback Ron Springs, who was supposed to be the lead blocker on the play, was the missing player on the field.

He may have missed being in on that play but I know that he is with Landry and the other ‘Boys in Cowboy Heaven!

I didn’t know he was still in a coma. My hope is he is resting comfortably with the Lord now. Requiem Aeternam

I remember him well.. and, the stories the league did on the kidney transplant... those were good days for the NFL.

It’s pretty rare that I read a story about someone dying and think, “Man.. this is a GOOD thing”. But, in this case... I suppose it is. Ron can now, finally be at peace. And, his family can start putting their own lives back together.

He was one of the “good ones”...

RIP, Mr. Springs.
