A bit of an issue I have with talk radio

Posted on 06/09/2011 6:54:10 AM PDT by no gnu taxes

It's with the advertisers. And I'm referring to the talk radio good guys. I wouldn't expect any better from the Dims (if you could even find a show of their's on the air to know who the advertisers were.)

I'm not going to mention any particular shows.

One company you commonly you commonly hear advertising is doublemyspeed.com. This company (like mycleanpc.com) is an ourtight SCAM! Your computer can be completely free of any malware, and if you download the product, in order to scam you into purchasing their worthless "cleaner," they will note dozens of problems. Worse, they may download malware of their own onto your computer, making your computer worse than before.

Another advertiser is incomeathome.com. While not a scam, it is just your typical MLM/pyramid scheme type operation in which 99.9% of the people involved will either lose money (maybe a lot) or make so little that it is worth no where near the time and effort put in.

It just concerns me that people might have more faith in these companies because of where they hear the advertisements.

I'll only mention those 2 for now. There are some others that bother me, too.

I can’t stand the commercials. Geico is so annoying.

What's the problem.

Contact the shows producers, tell them of your concerns, let them know you won't be using those products and set a deadline for removal of those sponsors letting the producers know you will no longer listen to the radio program in question after that date. Also, don't use those products and let the Better Business Bureau of your concerns.

Simple.

Yeah, I know what you're saying -- I've often thought the same. But, at some point, people must begin to discriminate between what seems sensible and what is too good to be true.

My sister took a job once making flyers and putting them on cars with an 800 number to call (for something). Yeah, I know.

The extension supposedly indicated that they were calling due to one of her flyers and she'd get a commisssion. Gee, she didn't make a cent.

Learned a lesson, got a minimum wage job and started up the old-fashioned way.

Commercials ruin commercial talk radio for me. Maybe 37 minutes of content in an given hour and out of that. My time is much too valuable for that.

I think a market exists to adopt a commercial free subscription model for talk radio. For $20/month, you get talk radio streamed to your computer and you can listen in the car, iPod, etc., at your leisure with no commercials.

Ironically I subscribed to Sirus/XM satellite radio to get away from the commercials. However, the talk radio stations (and only the talk radio stations) have commercials!

My pet peeve is Jos. A. Banks: “Buy a shirt and we will give you TWO BUSINESS SUITS, A PAIR OF PANTS AND A BELT FOR FREE. Absolutely free.”

I think you’ve got it backwards.

These companies choose Rush or Hannity or Boortz because they’ve done the research and these guys happen to draw their target market.

It tells you more about the audience than it does about the advertisers.

I tell my kids that if something is advertised on national radio they should probably be more skeptical of it.

LOL. Yeah, I always wondered how they stayed in business with such offers. Although, their commercials lately seem to offer a lot fewer freebies.

Don't the big talkers have subscriptions without commercials? I don't use any, because I don't give any of my valuable time to radio. The only time I listen is in the car or the shower. But I think you can get podcasts or whatever.

With Limbaugh, I am pretty familiar with his format. Comes on at 7 after the hour. About 10 minutes of content, then commercials. Comes back for short segment before bottom of hour hard break. Back for another 10 minutes or so, then commercials. Back for short segment, then commercials. This one is a real scam, because he comes back just long enough to say he has to take a break, top of hour.

I kind of know when to bother listening. Basically from 10 before the hour to 7 after, don't bother. Also bottom of the hour don't bother.

I like listening to Rush, but wouldn’t consider buying anything from his advertisers. Any company that can afford the advertising rates there are charging way too much for their product.

Wonder whatever happened to company that kept pitching the steel buildings?

That’s not what’s wrong with talk radio. Well, okay, yes, there are too many commercials. But what’s really wrong with talk radio?

I’m driving home yesterday in 97 degree heat, traffic slow downs, rush hour road construction, idiot drivers and Sean Hannity and some moron cousin of Anthony Weiner shouting over each other trying to get their points across. What I heard was about 30 seconds of loud, obnoxious audio spaghetti before I had enough and put on some music. They both sounded like total buffoons.

I could feel my blood pressure ebb immediately as the music filled my car.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

In 37 minutes I can **read** far more news right here on Free Republic! Also.. Have you noticed that nearly everything discussed on all of talk radio has been previously covered on Free Republic and that even the commentary comes from the comments posted by Freepers.

I have nearly given up on talk radio. I only listen when I am painting a room, sewing, or in the car.

The commercials that repeat the 800-number 14 times in 60 seconds will NEVER get a call from me.

"These companies choose Rush or Hannity or Boortz because they’ve done the research and these guys happen to draw their target market."

I don't know. I listen to Rush on several different streaming radio stations, and a very common commercial on all of them is Progressive's "Ask Flo" ads. I always thought Progressive donated to only liberal candidates and causes, then I laugh when they pay the big bucks to get on the air during Rush.

But I get what you're saying about target audience.

The one to watch out for is DirectBuy.com Supposedly a discount home furnishings store, it is a membership only scam. Cult-like atmosphere and highly defensive when questioned.

Both Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham have had them as advertisers.

The XM-only shows seem to have less commercials, though. If it is Beck, Hannity, etc, it is the same show with the same breaks, of course.. At least with Satellite, you can turn to music or something during the commercials and top of the hour news breaks. There’s always good music on somewhere, and you can select the song before changing.

"I like listening to Rush, but wouldn’t consider buying anything from his advertisers."

I bought a Bose Wave CD almost 14 years ago, a purchase I'll acknowledge was influenced by their advertising on Rush at the time.

It's still on my nightstand giving me good service well over a decade later :-)
