The Right TV (The 12 Best Conservative TV Shows)
National Review Online ^ | 6/15/2011 | Ben Shapiro

Not all TV shows are liberal. Some are, in fact, conservative — even if they don’t know it. It’s time to give credit where credit is due. Here’s a list of my top dozen conservative series in television history. These are not the most conservative shows in television history — they are the best shows that happen to carry conservative messages. My criteria, in order of importance: (1) portraying traditional American values in a positive light — values points; (2) taking on liberal sacred cows with total abandon — skewering points; (3) creating memorable conservative characters — we’ll call these sympathy points. They had to be good, too (sorry, Hogan’s Heroes). And no reality shows. I’ve tried to span the history of television (if we really did the top twelve conservative shows, the list would skew heavily to the 1950s). Also, I decided no creator could make two shows on the list.

My personal favorite is at No. 5, but let the argument begin.

The Andy Griffith show didn’t make his list. It was also a conservative show but Andy is one far left moron.

On NBC's Chuck, the Casey character, played by Adam Baldwin makes frequent positive comments about Reagan, etc. He not only has a picture of Reagan on his apartment wall, he also carries an 8x12 glossy of his hero (Reagan) with him on every mission.

I think he should have included NCIS and taken out some of the others (especially the animated ones). I dropped animation once I grew up. However, my mea culpa is that I’ve never watched those shows I’m referring to, so take it with a grain of salt.

As for my favorite of the bunch, that’s easy: Gunsmoke.

Magnum PI was, and is to this day one of my favorite shows, I never really considered it politically skewed one way or another, but Magnum certainly was a rugged individualist and I could see him voting for Reagan. Not to get off the topic, but their were a lot of good PI shows on in the 80’s Simon and Simon and The Fallguy come to mind. Then of course their was Miami Vice, but it got a little too pop cultury at times for my taste.

I have to agree with the author on Lost. Best show in the history of TV and it wasn’t afraid to promote God / heaven / faith.

In that regard, the X-Files should have been on the list.

Regarding #2 (Cosby Show): it was a black family that was apolitical. Very funny show and apolitical...but that doesn’t make it conservative. Bill Cosby is my favorite liberal, but he’s still a liberal. ‘Family Ties’ was very political, but was rather even-handed about attacking both sides. But I wouldn’t consider it conservative either.

I like Babylon 5, it had Bruce Boxenlietner and Jerry Doyle, both of whom are conservatives and very good actors.

Not to mention very good roles by Peter Jurassik and Andreaes Katsulas. It deals with politics very impressively.

It shows the two forces at work in the cosmos, the Shadows (disorder) and the Vorlons (order).

The Shadows are of the Anarchy and disorder variety and the Vorlons want to be your parents and tell you what to do.

True about Geer, but let’s not confuse the actors with the characters.

Shapiro’s #2 is my #1

Of course, I may be prejudiced because my girls used to call me “The White Bill Cosby.” :)

I’ve seen some South Park and been very amused and very offended by it.

The only other one that I can claim familiarity with on that list is Magnum P.I., which I have been buying on DVD. Except for the cars (not including the Ferrari), it has held up pretty well. Some very good stories in beautiful Hawaii. Still waiting for the one where Magnum gets hired to help a teenager named Barry find out who his daddy is.

He's right about LOST - that said I'm amazed there were a total of 12 conservative shows in the history of television's thousands of shows.

Twelve.

Liberals have that many new shows every season... not that we aren't grateful.

Lost was awful. Convoluted, and a real cop-out ending. Terra Nova appears to be a knock-off on Fox—after Lost pulled a “Bobby coming out of the shower” on us, I won’t be watching another show of that type.

No Andy Griffin?

Is outrage! And I do not care about his politics - we are talking about the show itself.

Andy was the only adult in all of Mayberry.
