Majorcan Descendants of Spanish Jews Who Converted Are Recognized as Jews
The New York Times ^ | 10 July 2011 | DOREEN CARVAJAL

Centuries after the Spanish Inquisition led to the forced conversion of Jews to Catholicism, an ultra-orthodox rabbinical court in Israel has issued a religious ruling that recognizes descendants from the insular island of Majorca as Jews.

The opinion focused narrowly on the Majorcan community of about 20,000 people known as chuetas and did not apply to descendants of Sephardic Jewish converts in mainland Spain or the broader diaspora of thousands of others who scattered to the Ottoman Empire and the Spanish colonies in South and North America.

The island, isolated until a tourist boom that began in the late 1960s, is a sociological preserve for descendants of Jews who formed an insular community of Catholic converts that intermarried through the centuries because of religious persecution and discrimination that barred them from holding certain positions in the Roman Catholic Church through the 20th century. Most carry the names of 15 families with ancestors who were tried and executed during the 17th century for practicing Judaism.

The religious court in Israel, led for more than 40 years by Rabbi Nissim Karelitz, sent another rabbi to the island in May to explore its warren of streets where a synagogue once stood and to examine the family trees of some of the chuetas who trace lineage back 500 years.

In a two-paragraph opinion — typical of the private rabbinical court that deals with matters of conversions, marriage conflicts and financial disputes — Rabbi Karelitz issued a statement that said because of the intermarriage patterns of the chuetas, “all those who are related to the former generations are Jews.”

Juan de la Cosa was a Christian. I have no idea what his background was, nor does it really matter. This is the only thing from him that anyone really cares about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1500_map_by_Juan_de_la_Cosa-North_up.jpg

Too many people are invested in being victims.

Surely you are not speaking of the Jewish people? For 2,500 years Jews have been persecuted... severely. Yet, they quietly picked up the pieces and kept on. For a victimized people, they are easily the most remarkable on earth.

Don't ever mention the word "victim" to a Jew. Jews don't want your sympathy - after the holocaust, Jews are simply sick of denial on the part of people like you.

Most likely you would pass on all scholarship. The simple fact is that all modern research and scholarship on the inquisition is revisionist. By necessity it has to be because people are actually looking at sources rather than simply making up tales to fit their preconceived ideas. Most likely you’ve never even read a single book on the inquisition. That’s usually how it goes.

That is really too funny. You are the denier of history. That's OK, we know your type.

Nope. I have studied it all my life and have a PhD in history. Have you read even a single reputable book on the inquisition? Even one?

“That’s OK, we know your type.”

My type is apparently far better informed than yours.

Again, have you read even one reputable book on the inquisition?

Funny stuff Vlad. Islam has many "PhDs in history" too. They deny the holocaust occurred; they deny Jews ever lived in the land of Israel. And Catholics explain that "the Inquisition wasn't that bad... we weren't as bad as the Nazis." Yeah, right.

Tell me, Vlad, who will write your "history"?

No, I'd pass on all fake scholarship.

How many reputable books on the inquisition have you read? Any? Any at all?

“Tell me, Vlad, who will write your “history”?”

What does it matter since I will know the truth of my life no matter what? Again, how many reputable books on the inquisition have you read? Any? Any at all? Can you answer that simple question?

I think you simply got outclassed on information. How many reputable books on the inquisition have you EVER read? Any at all?

This thread has long lost any semblance to a civic, rational discussion. Instead, what we have is pure culture war, appeals to emotional argument, etc. "My tribe is always right", on both sides. But paradoxically, it is not necessarily a "bad" thing. Not all history can be "reconciled" from a secular humanist perspective. Nor should it be.

LOL, are you trying to pass yourself off as some kind of intellectual? Even reading none is still more than having read Kamen the revisionist.

You blew your credibility to smithereens by saying "all modern research and scholarship on the inquisition is revisionist" while taking it to be the most valid at the same time. This isn't the place for your kind of radicalism, with all due respect. It's enough for Constantine to accuse Jesus Himself of committing "pernicious errors", never mind Canon 29 of the Synod of Laodicea calling Jesus "anathema" from Himself. Have a nice day . . .

That is not a simple question, considering the source. What do you mean by "reputable" - one that agrees with your revisionism?

Fodder for discussion:

This article seems to get at the historical heart of the matter without the breathless condemnations so prevalent nowadays.

You can't use that! Vlad won't accept a Jewish source. Only sources that speak well of "the church" can be considered "reputable."

Honestly, all those Maranos were Christians, who were lovingly brought to repentance of their heresy. The "holy church" was doing them a favor by chopping of their hands and their heads! Better to lose an eye (or a head) in this world than to suffer eternal damnation by papal decree.

Love, pure love. /sarc

No, yours was. You accused Jews of playing the "victim card."

I’m speaking of many types of people and was making a point that appears to have eluded you.

The thread is about Jews. The dispute is whether the Inquisition really persecuted Jews. You weren't speaking of "many types of people" - you were speaking about Jews. Are you (d)eluding yourself?

Just because racism and victimization is a modern non sequitur, does not mean that so-called conservatives can resort to slandering the Jewish boogieman - again. There are quite a few on FreeRepublic that like to give in to their "inner skinhead."
