They want you to think you are going to die if you don’t watch their weather report. We get the same cra@ in the winter in northern climate and the reporting of wind chill.

Aw, you’re just jealous other folks get to have temperatures in the 110’s like we do. It’s just that ours are for real.

I’m more annoyed with the reporters walking around with those laser thermometers telling us how hot the hood of a car is.

while we are at it, can we do away with the phrase, "it isn't the heat, it's the humidity"?

it's stupid. of course it's the heat.

It’s only 99 here today.
But it feels like 372.

I agree... and I think it is to push the global warming manure. The local stations are showing the heat index temps instead of actual. And I’ve no doubt people are saying “summers are 15 degrees hotter than ever! Must be that global warming. Pass the salt.”

Actually, the “feels like” is meant to be taken literally. The heat index is calculated from the actual temperature and the humidity, and is intended to convey what temperature it would feel like it was. The temp may be 95, but with humidity, it may feel like it is 106. That’s helpful to know, since it helps to determine when you might want to do work outside, how strenuously, etc.

I remember the 'feels like' weather going back to wind chill index years ... mid 70's, I think.

Before that .. it was hot. cold, and/or wet.

I don't know how we did it ... but we survived ... especially after sharing one Nehi with two other friends, riding our bikes from 8 or 9 AM until dusk without helmets ....

Tell me about it. When I talk to folks around the country about the temperature here, they always say, “But it’s a DRY heat, right??” I always say, “Tell that to the turkey next Thanksgiving.”

I’m with you.

“hwat’s the tempature?”

“The thermoter says it’s 106 degrees.”

“That’s what it feels like to me, too.”

So, are you saying it would “feel” 95 if the humidity was zero? How the heck do they know how I’d feel with zero humidity?

The “feels like” is actually legitimate. It’s a combination of base temperature, wind, cloud cover, and humidity. Put them together, and with either hot temperatures or cold temperatures, it makes quite a difference, compared to base temperature.

This matters if you are doing outside activities, especially with young children. A base temperature that would be pleasantly cool indoors might be downright chilly with some wind, humidity and clouds. And warm can be quite hot, with the same variables.

Quit watching the weather channel when for some reason they felt compelled to start covering the news, new bands, etc. - everything but the weather. Did see something on FOX Business the other day about one of the new electric cars which soon will provide you with the ability to plug in your microwave so at least you will have that appliance when the power goes out. Let’s see, since I live in hurricane country should I buy a generator for $5,000 or spend $35,000 for an electric car so I have back-up power for my microwave? Tough decision.

That’s what “they” say. Why are the weather-etts changing their reporting this year?

What you mean “we”, kimosabe?

YOU can do whatever you like. I could care less.

But *I* plan to continue to acknowledge that there’s a significant difference — a *physics-based* difference — between low humidity gas and high humidity gas.

Physics — it’s not just a feeling, it’s the *law*.

The problem is that throughout the eastern part of the country no one has any idea what the "real" temperature feels like. With your "95 feels like 106" example, have you ever had a day with 32% humidity where "95 feels like 95"? Around here 95 always feels like 106 (51% humidity) or more likely 123 (70% humidity).

My heat index calculations are from http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/html/heatindex.shtml

It might just be me, but I think the weather-ettes are hotter this year than they were last year. :-)

It actually makes quite a bit of sense.

A Mohave Desert 100 degree temp, is much different than a Midwestern high humidity 100 degree temp.
