I started lurking in 2001. I got on the AOL message boards right after 9/11. I kept running into truly obnoxious posters. I noticed that they had the most contempt for a site called Free Republic. I thought, if they hate it, it must be the place for me. It was. But I don't think lurker status counts for much among those here the longest. Except for Jim Robinson and crew that have always appreciated the donations from lurkers that keep this site up and running for everyone.
