Cliff Robertson, who starred as John F. Kennedy in a 1963 World War II drama and later won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a mentally disabled bakery janitor in the movie "Charly," died Saturday, one day after his 88th birthday.

He played JFK in the movie, PT 109. We watched it on tv last night. It’s been playing all week.
Never heard of the guy. Prayers anyway.
Understatement is my specialty! OH, I remember what a mess that was, but was so proud of Robertson for doing it, knowing what it would do to his career. As I said, a real hero.

Thought he was a wondrously slick, sleazy, bad guy/politician opposite Henry Fonda in ‘The Best Man’. Then managed to tear at the heart in ‘Charly’.
One of the last of the great Old School, versatile, trained actors.
His one big mistake was turning down the role Jack Lemmon snagged in ‘The Days Of Wine And Roses’. Since somehow, Cliff thought it was a comedy.

Yes, same concept as ‘Awakenings’ with Robert De Niro. Both mirror the path from child to adult and the longing to return to innocence of childhood. Garden of Eden, eating the forbidden fruit and all that.
A real man who stood up for what he believed was truth, not what would ‘get him ahead’.

Robertson had a great caree, a good long life, never heard a hin of a scandal, and most importantly, as he got older, he knew when to retire from the public eye...there are many who could learn from that..
His big comeback came as the AT&T pitchman, I believe.
The sleasball was embezzeling from his studio by issuing 1099s to actors while cashing their checks as his own. The upshot was Robertson was ostracized because he blew the whistle to the authorities while the sleeze got a promotion to another studio I believe. It was a tremendous scandal and shows what happens in Hollywood if you don’t play ball.
I actually met him twice. Once, he was campaigning with Edmund Muskie at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. Then, strangely enough, I sat beside him on a flight from Miami to L.A. - in coach. He was a very friendly person on the flight.
