I agree it is not Perry’s job to make Romney look bad. However, it is his job to make himself look good. A politician’s ability to debate is not a reflection on his ability to govern but it is a reflection of his skill as a candidate. He has been a good governor but the reality is that unless he steps up his communications skills, he is a goner from that stage.

why it is somehow Perry and only Perry’s job to be able to make Romney look bad in the debates.

It's not. It's Perry's job to make Perry look good. He's failing, Romney's benefiting.

The big winner (without question) was Palin. She played it smart. Let Perry become the great white horse. And then fall in a pile of sh!t.

Can you imagine her bumbling and fumbling like Perry? I don’t think so. She would articulate a clear concise conservative message.

And this is someone who supported Perry (look it up). Right up until last night. But this guy makes Bush look articulate. He’s an embarrassment.

And now we see 2 things here.

1. THIS is the reason there’s been so many of these debates. To flood people with so much that they can’t stand ANY of the people running.

2. To get these people to stumble, than blare it out to everyone at maximum volume.

Not that anyone asked for my opinion on this but I am a Perry supporter even have bumper stickers on both my cars. Yes Dems I have 2 cars and a job so I guess I'm rich. But after last night I'm very concerned. Romney looked good. Perry did not it's that simple. I will stick by my candidate to the end. If it's Romney I'll vote for him over Barry for sure. Just had so much more hope for Perry. Tell me this isn't the best it gets with him.

sorry, but you just wrong.

Dukakis beat Reagan in debates.
Perot destroyed both Clinton and Bush in debates
Alan Keys destroyed W in the 2000 primary debates

I could go on and on.

Being good at debates has almost nothing to do with winning and especially nothing to do with governing. Giving a good speech is important, your presence in important, your ability to debate someone is insignificant in the election and has zero to do with the actual job.

I have at times in my past, thought Romney was bearable.

In fact after Duncan Hunter dropped out and Chuck Norris endorsed Huckabee in 2008, I settled on Romney as the best of a limited field.

Since then, I’ve very much soured on the guy. But he did pretty well yesterday, IMHO.

Liked Santorum - a lot.

I have been an avid Palin supporter. But I have been supporting Perry as well (at least until she makes a decision). But he's just is not ready for prime time. Same thing over and over. "We need to get America working again, yada yada, tort reform, blah blah low taxes."

No clear message.

And when he's asked for specifics, he stumbles. Romney looked presidential and would give Obama a much better fight. I hate to say it.

I mean look how bad he was and he was only part of a 2 hour debate for maybe 20 minutes (with 9 candidates). What happens when he's one on one for 2 hours. God it could get ugly.

That's why I think there is not a better opportunity for Palin to jump in and take the conservative mantle.

No question that his plea to have a heart for illegals was damaging in most Republican voter’s eyes.

Here's Perry’s attack on Romney’s flips flops: "You were after this before obamacare you were before this after that before race to the top after that."

Thanks---I heard him mumble something but could not figure out what on earth he was saying.

It's bad enough Perry's incoherent, inarticulate, mumbles, and comes up with some really dumb non sequiturs, but he does it all with that goofy grin on his face.

That might go over big in cattle country, now somebody ought to tell Perry he's not in Texas anymore.

Anyone who chooses their candidate based solely (or even mainly) on that person's debate showings is missing 99.999% of what that person is about. Look what we got out of the "great speaker Barry".

That said, I agree that excessive debates do little more than sour the voters toward ALL of the candidates.

“Dukakis beat Reagan in debates”

That’s even more impressive when you realize that the two never debated.

Perry is the “conservative” placeholder until Palin gets in.

"You were after this before obamacare you were before this after that before...

Darn near went to sleep during Perry's "You were for this before you were against this..." blame-game response. I think that's where I flicked the Perry OFF switch...

The most important thing that happened in last nights debate, was when Perry turned and started to attack Romney (he bungled it totally, admittedly) BUT that doesn’t matter, what matters is that Perry showed his hand, and we now know exactly how Perry will attack Romney, he will hit him HARD on flip flopping and peg him as a untrustworthy RINO. And it will work, mark my words.

1% of the population watched that debate last night, and most of those were just supporters of a particular candidate, the normal people wont turn off American Idol and spare a thought about the election for some time now. But don’t worry because during every commercial brake Perry will be destroying Romney and painting him as an opportunistic flip flopper who can’t be trusted by conservatives.

You’ll see, just wait till the next wave of polls come out and Perry is still hugging 30%, and more importantly, just keep your eyes on the state polls. Because Romney will basically only win the states McCain did in 2000 against Bush.

The only debate Dukakis ever won was on Saturday Night Live.
