Path to the nomination: Did Cain’s end yesterday?
Washington Post ^ | 08:45 AM ET, 11/01/2011 | By Jennifer Rubin

Posted on 11/01/2011 7:09:51 AM PDT by DBCJR

Herman Cain was in the center of a firestorm, largely of his own making, yesterday. He knew before he entered the presidential race that he had a sexual harassment settlement in his past. He knew, ever since Politico started questioning his campaign, that a story was afoot. He knew he had to get the story out quickly and truthfully. And yet, by the end of the day, the business executive peddling his leadership skills and know-how looked somewhat like the hapless PBS executive who eventually got ousted for screwing up the Juan Williams firing.

...

Iowans don’t need to believe he is innocent of sexual harassment to vote for him. But they do need to trust him. Virtually everything that happened yesterday with regard to this issue served to damage his trustworthiness. Beyond the point of no return? We’ll find out.

This should serve as a warning to all the vanity candidates (i.e., those without experience who run essentially as celebrities) in this and future cycles: A presidential nomination process is brutal and serious stuff. If they think there is no downside to competing, they are wrong. They may, at the end, come out diminished people, less respected and liked than when they went in.

Some people call this unfair and harmful to our political process. I disagree. If unserious and ill-prepared candidates try to take the voters for a ride, don’t bother to understand the issues or even their own weaknesses, they pretty much get what they deserve. And if voters bury their heads in the sand and vote for them anyway, they deserve what follows as well.

You said, “the dual standard is evidence of a manipulative racism.” From this in can be inferred that an accusation is to be dismissed out of hand.

I realize the following repeats the point I made in my original post, but I think, at this point, it is useful to do that:

Liberals will exonerate any Democrats for any or almost any form of sexual misconduct. Why, a Governor can rape a woman who is economically dependent on contracts with the state, and liberals will say “it’s not impeachable.”

Conservatives cannot do that. Conservatives need to have objective standards. Obviously, to a Conservative, what Clinton did was impeachable. But, does this mean that a misdemeanor offense when a person was in college is disqualified? Where should we draw the line?

In my original post I laid out the following: what if a person did something that was not objectively wrong, to which somebody else took offense, and that somebody else said this either to this person directly or to this person indirectly via a third party? If the appropriate response was to apologize and not persist in that behavior, and that’s what the person did, I’d say that would actually be a plus for the person.

We know that in the Clarence Thomas case, there was no contemporaneous complaint. It was a recollection of one person of something that had occurred years prior. The FBI, in their very thorough background checks, routinely uncovers odd recollections. Their raw files are supposed to be handled with discretion and judgement exercised as the use of unsubstantiated information.

The whole thing was therefore a tragedy. Just a willingness of liberals to destroy the lives of two people, Anita Hill as well as Clarence Thomas, on the possibility that somebody else might step forward to corroborate her allegation that Clarence Thomas had a character flaw. When nobody did, she looked like some kind of overly affected woman who, over the years, transferred a line in a movie to her relationship to the man.

As I do not know what will be developed in the present case, I will not comment on it.

SOJOCO is a retread named non-sequitur who got the zot from JF for many things including trying to convince JR that gays in the military wasn’t a bad thing and DADT was a bad thing. JR gave the 8 year old troll the zot. He came back as drennanwhyte, was spotted fast and got the zot again. He cam back as Kstater, got the zot again and is now back as SOJOCO.

Unless you're a celebrity named Barak Obama in 2008 and you have no experience at anything and you lie about everything and the press loves you and loves you and praises you and worships you and adores you.

Unless that.

What it boils down to is Cain giving multiple versions of what happened and what he knew. His story kept changing, and something that should have been out of the news cycle by last night is now on its third day.
I think you are grossly exaggerating what happened.

No, the “dual standard” reference is exactly what I stated it was in the last post, a comparison that shows racism, not a declaration of Cain’s innocence. Please re-read my last post.

You are obviously a patriotic, conservative and a wonderful lady. We might disagree on Cain. No worries. Let us leave it at that.

I don't think so. Love him or hate him, Bill Clinton wrote the book on how to handle things like this during a campaign. When Clinton ran for the presidency his organization had an immediate and unchanging response to every problem they faced. Cain is out there winging it as he goes along, changing the story hour by hour. Either his campaign staff failed him on this one or he ignored them.

And I'll be sure to take your Cain worship into account when considering your replies as well.

See...that right there is FUNNY. I can find post after post to support the absolute fact that you are a Palin supporter. And I know for a fact you will not find one post where I "worship" Cain...or even speak of how great he is. In fact...you will find more posts of me supporting Palin than Cain.

Yet...instead of just admitting the bias you obviously have...you make something up in an attack. NICE!

And BTW...there is a LOT more to be skeptical about with Palin than Cain. She gives a great speech and is a great Cheerleader for the conservative cause...but she never ONCE put a policy or position out there for critic or scrutiny. Hard to not be skeptical of a void.

I think the Post has taken too many Disneyworld vacations, they are stuck in Fantasyland, they believe dreams will come true.

Don’t let him fool you, he’s no Palin supporter, he just said that as an “in” to make himself invisible on the radar. He in fact hated Palin as he does all conservatives. SOJOCO is a retread from Kansas, used to live in Chicago, that got zotted..name was non-sequitur, pretty much despised by all since 2002. Got the zot from JR personally for supporting homos in the military. Came back as drennanwhyte, got the zot, came back as kstater, got the zot and is now back as SOJOCO and once again bashing conservatives.

Here is the link to his zot. It was sweet and most FReepers were celebrating for a week or 2.
