**RIFLE VANITY** Long-Distance Shooting and Hunting
12/17/2011 | Moi

Posted on 12/17/2011 9:34:30 AM PST by rabidralph

I am looking to buy a rifle that would serve two purposes: primarily a long-distance shooter and secondarily a larger game taker downer :-)

I like to shoot beyond 600 yards and I want a rifle to suit that purpose. From info I've gathered, I should get a larger-calibered rifle, with at least a 24" barrel. I would like to keep the rifle below 10lbs because I also want to hunt with it some day. I am interested in hunting elk and moose, eventually. So I am thinking of a .308.

Thanks. I shot a friend’s Nagant last month and absolutely loved it and I have put it on my list becasue it is so inexpensive to own and shoot. I wasn’t sure if it would be suitable to do what I want or not.

Well you didn’t read my original post clearly as I’ve said throughout this thread that I am not shooting at animals at 600 yards. I just enjoy target practicing at post-600.

I have several 700’s. I love every one of them. Especially the 7mm Ackley. (280 Rem. ballistics identically) I have to score it on 5 individual targets, since it virtually shoots into the same hole at 100 meters. Deviation over 5 rounds loses less than ten to 15 one hundredths total, off DCZ.

And it cost me around 500 bucks to build it.

I would choose the Rock River .308, of the choices you posted. I have and had many accurate bolt guns, but love shooting semi-autos more. The RRA will deliver bolt gun accuracy and the .308 is more than adequate for North American deer/Elk out to 300 yards.

Some of these post are hilarious in their silliness...

No, I read your original post. I gathered that. Read all of my posts to others on this thread. I point out how you can easily take those kind of shots. I have taken countless 600 plus shots at Caribou, Elk, Deer, Sheep, etc. The only exception to that would be Bear.

Many times, a client would take the leg off an animal from closer range, and I would have to stop it from getting away. I have taken shots at 1,000 before. A good range finder is worth it’s weight in Gold.

I always stalk to at least 200 though. It’s the only ethical thing to do.

My Remington M700 .308 with the 5R MilSpec barrel groups like yours. Great rifle - mine likes the Sierra 168 HPBT match at around 2650 fps.

You should chunk your MOA calculator and get a new one.

Obviously, you have very little “Bolt gun” experience.

If what you said were true, then the best shooters at Camp Perry would surely be using them. But last time I checked, about all you would get from a claim like that on the range at Camp Perry, would be uncontrollable laughing.

Is that “MilSpec” barrel, a chromed Helical type? Or is it straight rifled?

I have always had great results from a #5 in the .308. But for 7mm, it seems like a #6 works better. Something to do with harmonics.
