Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger reports that a woman starved to death after embarking on a spiritual diet that required her to stop eating or drinking and live off sunlight alone.

The Zurich newspaper reported Wednesday that the unnamed Swiss woman in her fifties decided to follow the radical fast in 2010 after viewing an Austrian documentary about an Indian guru who claims to have lived this way for 70 years.

***an Indian guru who claims to have lived this way for 70 years.****

Oh, but at night I stake out my strong box
That I keep under lock and key
And I take it off to my closet
Where nobody else can see
I open that door so slowly
Take a peek up north and south
Then I pull out a Hostess Twinkie
And I pop it in my mouth.

Yeah, in the daytime I’m Mr Natural
Just as healthy as I can be
But at night I’m a junk food junkie
Good lord have pity on me.

I think that is an outstanding idea and that obastard should lead they way by doing it first.

He could join this pinhead woman in improving the gene pool.

In one of Chesterton’s Fr. Brown mysteries, a modern day sun-worshipper goes blind.

I thought his New Age-ish parable was far-fetched.

I’ve live my whole life on sunlight alone... ok, maybe the occasional box of ho hos, bag of chips, half gallon of ice cream and something to wash it all down with. But other than that, it’s just been sunlight.

Personally, I'd like to thank her for proving that living on nothing but sunlight and spiritual belief shouldn't be an option for us Right Wing logical types.

However, I'd like to recommend that large scale tests be performed, employing those who believe deeply in the Green Revolution and Climate Change.

It would be Win-Win for the Earth.

By the way, I'm reminded of:
"Harold, the ambitious sheep..." with the punchline, "Because of the enormous commercial possibilities should he succeed."

Strictly speaking, she's unlikely to be in the running for a Darwin award. The award is for those people who take themselves out of the gene pool before reproducing.

...woman in her fifties...

I don't think she was in any danger of reproducing and she very well may already have had offspring.

after viewing an Austrian documentary about an Indian guru who claims to have lived this way [on sunlight] for 70 years.

Little did she know that the guru was the local distributor for Sunlight brand nutrient drink. Said the documentary's producer, "oh, did I leave that out? My bad."

Seems she "made it" into the next life...

We will reach our own finish line some fine day.
