Death from above: Hawk snatches reality TV star Shanna Moakler’s beloved lapdog

Moakler -- a former Miss USA and Playboy playmate, who currently hosts “Bridalplasty” on E! -- broke the news herself via her Twitter account, stating on Monday that “A eagle attacked my 2 chi's today, my girl pup is at the vet, my boy is missing.”

“Chi’s” are Chihuahuas, and Moakler later clarified that it was a hawk that attacked the pets at her Calabasas home. The small dogs are easy prey for large raptors like hawks and eagles -- in this case, one was injured and the other is presumably hawk food.

I've never seen that, but I've seen redtails take out wabbits and squirrels in the median of expressways before. I've heard an owl take out a critter of some sort in my front yard. It screamed like it was dying. Woke me up at about 2AM. I then heard the owl "hooooooo." I looked outside and saw nothing. It was gone.

We all know about the coyotes these days, but everyone forgets about the birds. Hawks and eagles are often scavengers, but I have no doubts they'll go after a small dog if its available to them. They aren't picky.

I’d had birds hit the doorwall and windows before knocking them out. Unfortunately for them, a neighbor’s outdoor cat sometimes likes to visit. A couple of those birds became cat food.

Last summer I saw a great horned owl make a low pass over my Jack Russell. Just getting a better look I guess. I would not want to see that. Those birds will go after wild turkeys. Owl calls are used to find turkey nests so I know the best spot for decoys the next morning.

"We know of a Mexican eagle that patrols CA 76 through Oceanside/Vista. They eat doggies."

Just doing the jobs American eagles won't do.

Well, crows in Japan learned to drop nuts into traffic so that cars would crush them, and then wait for the light to go red before collecting the food. So, maybe your theory is not too far-fetched.

Sad Story!!

When my shih-tzu was a pup, my husband warned me about hawks swooping into our back yard to carry him off — I thought he was joking!! Now, I’m glad I kept an eye on my pup at all time — hawks swoop into our pomegranate trees to grab tree rats all the time.

* * * * *

The crows here in N. Calif do the same thing: Drop walnuts from my neighbor’s tree into the road, then wait till they are conveniently crushed by passing traffic. I wonder: do great (crow) minds think alike, or was this technique passed from crow to crow until it reached around the world?
