‘The Avengers’ Has Record-Setting $200.3 Million In Sales

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Hollywood’s superhero summer has arrived with a vengeance.

The Marvel Comics mash-up “The Avengers” launched the summer movie season with a $200.3 million opening weekend domestically, by far the biggest debut ever.

If distributor Disney’s revenue estimate Sunday holds when the final weekend count is released Monday, “The Avengers” would be the first movie ever to haul in $200 million in a single weekend.

A $200 million total for every movie in release is considered a great weekend for the business as a whole, so “The Avengers” redefines the standards for a blockbuster debut.

“The Avengers” shot past the previous record of $169.2 million for the debut of last year’s “Harry Potter” finale.

With $441.5 million overseas since last week, “The Avengers” worldwide total climbed to $641.8 million.

I had to look Smulders up on IMDB.com. When I realized who she was I was taken aback. Her character on HIMYM is so different. But man, is she hot in "Avengers".

I think two great parts of Avengers is where Loki says mankind wants to be ruled.....that freedom is oversold and too much work.

How true of our society today!

The other great part is where Coulson tells Cap that they made him a new suit. He asked if it has the stars and stripes. Cap thinks the world does not believe in the flag anymore.

At the end of the movie where she was walking away from the camera...?

She definitely has hips.

Saw it last night. Fun. A bit slow and tangled at first but a thrill ride once it gets going.

Took my son to the Friday midnight premier (3D), took my daughter to the Saturday morning matinee (also 3D). Loved every minute. Well, there was one sad/bad moment, but that character got off a good last shot.

I love SciFi, period. Some of the flicks are good, some are bad but I don't look at any of them other than entertainment.

As for the resurrections of the Marvel comics and such in the movies, X-Men, Iron Man, Spider Man I've enjoyed them all.

I've got a great home theater system with a 60" Pioneer Plasma and I get all my movies from the public library. Granted, I can only get them months after their release but at least I'm not spending a ton of money at the theaters that won't pause the movie if I have to go to the bathroom.....LOL!

As a side note, I grew up in a small town in northern Michigan and had an uncle that owned the "paper" store where he sold newspapers of course and comic books. From about 1958 to approx. 1966 I bought every 10 cent comic book that was produced during that time. In other words, I once owned and read every single Marvel and DC super hero comic book that made its debute during that time. And my mom threw them away.........woe is me.
