My 02 GMC has 200k+ on her now, she is showing signs of old age. I want to upgrade to a diesel. Just wondering what the FReeper World thinks is the best diesel 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck.
I am not picky about brand names. I could go with a Ford for political reasons......

why do you want a diesel?
Just from casual observations, I see a lot more older Fords on the road. They seem to last longer. My FIL is hooked on Dodge but I notice he trades them in every two years.
Maybe you should wait till after the election. Diesel is as expensive as it is. If the Marxist wins he’s going to do everything he can to raise that price into the stratosphere to cripple the economy even further which will raise food prices to astronomical levels getting more people dependent on the gov. which is just how he wants it.
I’ve always driven Toyota trucks and love them, but no diesel models available in US as of now.
My friends who drive diesels for their horse trailers etc like Dodges, because they have Cummings diesels, which last forever and get good mileage, too,
Best all around diesel truck is Ford, as the motor is good and the rest of the vehicle will hold up.
Chevy is pure junk all around.

Ford is good but very expensive.
Don’t have a personal preference but man can you make those deisels turn it on with some minor changes.
Agree with waterhill. Ford is what you want. Dodges have lousy transmissions as well. Everything on them fails all around the bulletproof engine. Chevy duramax is good but not great. Get a ford.
He bought a Ford as the truck for the task. F250 Diesel. About every option available except dually rear end. He burned up 2 transmissions in 110,000 miles though the engine never missed a beat.
So he bought a Dodge Cummins diesel, and he's never had any trouble with this truck. He and my mom have it on the road at least once a month, so they are using it often to tow heavy loads.
Like a poster said, he may have the entire truck go south on him before the diesel engine give up. That might be true of lots of diesel trucks, though.
Friend owns a tranny shop and tells me Fords have the best trannys the last five years, also tells me he could’nt survive without Dodge trucks:)
For the average guy Diesel’s are overrated.
I bought my truck 6months before the Ford Ecoboost came out. I wish I’d waited. The nice thing about turbo is the low end torque which is what you get from diesel.
Dodge from what I’ve seen have way too many problems.
I wanted to trade my ‘01 GMC extended cab 4WD Sierra on an F-150 but the Ford was more than 10 percent more expensive than the 2011 GMC, which I bought.
I was surprised to discover the 2011 Sierra no longer featured four wheel disc brakes (the back brakes are now drums.)
The new truck has the same 5.3 gasoline motor but with 6 speed auto transmission, it gets slightly better mileage. It doesn’t feel as strong as the ‘01 as the transmission is constantly hunting taller gears.
I found a low-mileage '04 engine. I deleted the EGR. Had to Pull the cab off to replaced the engine, but well worth it.
Truck has 250K miles on it, but engine only has about 90K.
Runs great!
I was a GM and Mopar guy all my life. No more... Ford EARNED my respect and my money from now on. (I DID have a model A when I was a kid, and I tried to put a Hemi in it) lol
