Apple iOS 6 vs. Android vs. Windows Phone (Comparison Chart)

Apple's World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) kicked off today with the unveiling of iOS 6 for the iPhone and iPad. Apple is promising over 200 new features in the latest version of its mobile operating system, but only a few of them were highlighted in the keynote.

June is an exciting month for smartphone fanatics as Microsoft is expected to unveil the next generation of Windows Phone at an event next Wednesday, June 20 while Google is expected to reveal its plans for the next version of Android, codenamed "Jellybean."

While some of the features Apple announced today already exist on competing platforms, Apple is putting its own twist on these updates. For example, Siri, Apple's voice-activated virtual assistant, is even smarter now with support for sports, movies, and restaurants. Siri can also directly launch apps, but you still can't control these third-party apps with your voice.

Apple is also breaking up with Google Maps and launching its own Maps application with iOS 6. It includes local business information, Yelp integration, real-time traffic updates, and turn-by-turn navigation. Naturally, Apple has also added Siri integration to maps so you can ask questions along your journey such as, "Are we there yet?" or "Where's the next gas station?" Apple has also added a 3D/fly-over mode to its Maps application, , which shows you detailed 3D models of buildings and landmarks.

These updates certainly give Microsoft and Android something to chew on. While both competing platforms offer voice-command support, those features are crude in comparison to Siri's artificial intelligence and natural dictation. Microsoft's Bing Maps could definitely use a revamp in the next version of Windows Phone as its turn-by-turn directions feature is quite clunky (you must tap your phone at each turn).

Hopefully they will do another comparison chart when Windows 8 comes out. Or they should have done the comparison when it was IOS 5, to be really comparable.

I would like to hear from someone that has owned both an IPhone and a “similar” Android phone.

I spoke with a girl at a phone store and she said she has both. She said the IPhone and Android operating systems are about the same.

Why are Iphone people so high on Iphones?

Actually there are several phone manufacturers that make phones that run the Android operating system so Android users have a much larger choice of cell phones to choose from.

Just give people more reasons to stare at their damn phones and not look at where they are walking/driving.

Disclaimer:
I use Android because it came with the damn phone.

I had a smart phone and the got the new iphone. I love the iphone; maybe because I had an ipad first, so their is not too much difference. I think the Iphone is so much quicker and has so many more apps to choose from. I can let kids play with my iphone. With my old phone it did not take much to lock it up. It locked up all the time.

I saw one of the phones which is made in China.

I didn’t buy it...

Why would I buy something I don’t need, which is made in China?

Just asking. Why?

Apple: you may find better, but you’ll never pay more!

You are likely to get a much more consistent experience with an iPhone. I have an Android device that was fantastic when it was new. At this point it’s not really a supported device and the newer versions of Android do not run well on it. The flawless operating system I once used is gone and in its place is an operating system that sometimes struggles, thanks to Verizon and Motorola. It is much more challenging to work with multiple device manufacturers and literally hundreds of combinations of hardware whereas Apple has only three devices to work with.

Their list has issues..

Chrome is not the only browser with tabs in android. Opera has them.

Android can stream video/audio over 4G something the current Iphone can only dream of doing.

Apple is always slow to pickup on new stuff. But they do seem to make a quality product.

(send from my chromebook ;) )

Why are Iphone people so high on Iphones?

Because it is a fashion accessory for some...versus how utilitarian it is.

I have owned an iPhone before but the last few iterations have always been Android based, I prefer the flexibility of Android phones with respect to apps and changing things around if I so choose to.

That said I have also been through each generation of iPad and continue to use the latest iteration 'New iPad' as they call it (or iPad 2.5), and love it due to the quicker response and overall slickness versus Android based tablets.

The thing being I use both devices for different purposes, the phone mostly for, well calls, text and e-mails, with occasional web or YouTube watching. The tablet more for reading eBooks or other documents, more web surfing and videos as well as connecting to servers and such via Citrix if I need to work on something remotely.

So I think either OS is suitable for everyday use and it just comes down to what you do with it and preference, but on the phone front as you noted there are better phones that come with Android OSes.

I’m still a Droid person. I just got a Droid Razr Maxx and Xyboard and I love them. I am running both Google Music and MotoCast and have a lot more music available (streamed from my PC) than I would even if I tried to sync our massive library with iTunes. I’m about to sync my Google TV with it too so I can have my music throughout the house. The music sync issue used to be a big attraction for most people to iPhones but it isn’t a game changer now.

I love reading all these posts. However, I am an old man. I finally gave in and got a cell phone. Really don’t like it that much because people can find me when I don’t want to be found. It is a bother for someone to call me while I am fishing.

I survived without one for 50 years. I think all the gadgets are great. Just not for me.

I think it is funny that people can not survive without these things.

God, I should have been born 150 years ago!

Blessings, bobo

I plan on getting a tablet and I've got it narrowed down to a few android models and the new ipad. I use Sony internet TV, which is an android system. I believe it was just upgraded to the 'Ice Cream Sandwich' version.

Having gotten used to android, I was wondering if I'd have much of an adjustment to make if I went with the ipad. Would I be better off sticking with android, or is there not that much of a difference to let it be a deciding factor?

Shoot BoBo you can send a picture of your catch to a buddy right after you reel it in. I have a friend that did this and then promptly dropped his phone in the water. I see your point BoBo

So far the iOS has been USELESS for voice commands. USELESS> What an ass-kicking Apple has taken by Android and Windows 7 devices having excellent voice commands when Apple can’t get it right.

Me: “Call Wife Mobile”
iPhone: “Calling Home Home”

Me: “Call Wife Mobile”
iPhone: “Calling 911”

Me: “Call Scott”
iPhone: “Playing Songs by Rush”

The iPhone is a brick when it comes to using voice commands. Simply embarrassingly USELESS.

They can be life savers. Just turn the phone off when you’re not using it. You’ll have safety and privacy.

It is a bother for someone to call me while I am fishing.

Mine has an off button.

You can also download a new program named "Leave the damn phone in the truck".

Both features work flawlessly.
