How do satellites work?

Does anyone here have knowledge about space and how satellites work? How are they launched, kept in orbit and brought back to earth?

I'm a science geek and really curious about the universe.

I won’t bother. I studied Russian for a reason when I was in school. I do not claim to be a language specialist and I don’t bother with folks too clever by half. Next time try Latin that at least is universal

Same background and age bracket. Life is good, even when sometimes it appears not to be so. Stay healthy.

but there is the old adage that no question is a stupid question.

There is, but it has been proven wrong so many times it shouldn't be relied upon. Mostly proven wrong when the asker fails to listen in the first place. There are other examples, this thread being one of them. The information sought may not be 'stupid', but the framing of the question seeking that knowledge frequently is stupid. I have taught in a military environment, and your adage is almost always used as boilerplate at the beginning of a course of instruction along with it's cousin "the only stupid question is the one unasked'. Yet in a very short time, these adages prove to be false as the ability of students to frame stupid questions continues unabated.

Get over yourself.

Then see a shrink. You need more mental help than I.

According to Google translation it means “Go piss up a flagpole”.

That doesn’t make sense to you?

We could tell you; but then we would have to kill you. You could be a Russian secret agent.

Sometimes Google doesn’t give me the answers I’m looking for and the library doesn’t have many books on the subject.

"I’m not quite sure how my question was loaded. It seemed pretty simple and innocent to me."
Let the following answer suffice. By "loaded" I refer to asking something that requires a very long and detailed answer. We all ask loaded questions through our lives. It is part of the learning process. Perhaps I should not have used that phrase. My answers where not meant to "put you down". Quite the opposite. Get over it. And have fun learning new things.

I’m not a kid.

You guys are the ones acting like kids and attacking me because I asked a legitimate question.

I am listening, believe it or not,but not to the jerks who are ridiculing me for asking a question that is far from stupid.

A stupid question would be “Could I get electrocuted if I stick a fork in the toaster?”
