The electric car with a 500-mile range could finally match petrol power for distance

•QBEAK concept vehicle uses bio-methanol to boost its battery life.

Green, they may be. But electric cars have struggled to overcome one of the main shortfalls that put buyers off - an inferior range to their petrol-powered rivals.

That may be about to change after a new electric car was unveiled that promises to go 500 miles (800km) before the battery needs recharging.

This would be far more than one of the current leaders in the field, the battery/ gasoline Chevrolet Volt, which can do around 375 miles (600km) on one charge-up.

The Modular Energy Carrier concept (MECc), created by three Danish companies, uses bio-methanol to bolster its battery life.

Mogens Lokke, CEO of ECOmove, designers of the innovative 'QBEAK' car said bio-methanol was far better than diesel or gasoline because it produces substantially less carbon dioxide.

'In combination with the way we built the car, which is really lightweight (425 kilograms), we can get the 500-mile range,' he told CNN.

A bio-methanol/ water is converted by the fuel cell to create electricity, while waste heat from the process powers the car's heating and cooling system.

It also benefits from a innovative chassis design which has really pushed the technology forward.

'Instead of putting in a fixed battery, we have built in (six) modules that can be fitted inside the chassis. We can use battery power in the modules or any other kind of energy source,' Lokke said.

The award-winning QBEAK also uses patented in-wheel electric motors to deliver a top speed of 75mph (120kph).

When i drive my 500 mile car, i open the tank,,fill up, and in 5 minutes im rolling again. No coal powered (electric) car can match it.

EVERYTHING that takes us a step closer to not being dependent on Mideast oil, is a step toward greater security.

I have an idea...

Drill baby, drill...

I’m all for drilling. I’m all for conservation. Unlike the tree huggers, I’m not for conservation in order to caress nature, but as a way to increase national security.

The EPA would be concerned about excessive oxidization.

“bio-methanol

???
CH2OH is what it is
Calling it Bio-anything is just odd”

I’m guessing they mean methanol produced by fermenting bio-products like corn as opposed to synthesizing methanol from petroleum products like natural gas. Good leftists have to pick the renewable form of course. [rollseyes]

BTW, notice that they never include the production of CO2 during the fermentation process as part of the “emissions”.

And this brings up one of my pet peeves, the refusal of the GOP-e to every call the bluffs of any of these “CO2 is a pollutant” a-holes.

How about just once, the GOP-e tells them “Alright we give up, CO2 is a hideous pollutant that is going to destroy the Earth due to global warming and thus we are going to ban all fermented and carbonated foods and beverages because none of them are essential to life. So no more Sodas, beers, wines or any other liquor for that matter.” Then let’s sit back and see just how bad a pollutant they think CO2 really is.

The volt only goes 40 miles on battery, at best, before gas engine kicks in. Hardly the same as an electric that gets 500 miles on batteries.

How common is that though? Most days, I maybe put 12 miles or so on my vehicle. It’s so one sided that I don’t even read the highway MPG on stickers, because it’s the other number that is relevant to me.

apparently you don’t know what is created when you “burn” hydrogen...and what is necessary to “burn” it.

Depends if they can fast charge it with a higher voltage connection.

And of course you may wind up with a very burnt toasty car.

Where do these people think ELECTRICITY comes from anyway? Do they just think it resides in walls just waiting for them to plug in their little electric cars?

O2 is ozone

Wanna research that and get back to us?

O2 is the standard Oxygen molecule. Ozone is O3...
