5 easy survival food preps
Survivalist Boards ^ | 1/23/11 | Kev

Don’t want to stockpile 1,000 pounds of dried rice and beans? Want something that taste a little better then MREs? Want something that you don’t have to worry about rotating out?

One of the main problems with stockpiling survival food preps, is that people sometimes stockpile what they do not normally eat. So the food stocks sit in a closet, expire, and have to be thrown out. In the long run its easier to stockpile what your family normally eats so rotation is handled in a natural manner.

The drawback to eating canned foods is the sodium content.

Agree with the dried vs. canned fruits if you're having to backpack it. At home, canned is fine and you can add the juice to other dishes or drink it watered down because of the sugar content.

The article speaks to sodium content but most times you would drain the product so you'd have somewhat less sodium per serving. Don't throw out the liquid because it's vegetable stock so add it to a soup, rice or pasta dish. Of course, when adding this liquid adjust for the salt.

I've heard that adding a couple spoons of vinegar when boiling down a chicken or turkey carcass will help leach out calcium from the bones. I don't know if that's true. I've tried it and you can't taste the vinegar in the stock.

I'll pass on Jillian Michaels ultimate shakes due to her lifestyle.

Sorry to reply to you but I had to start somewhere. Everyone has it wrong. Do not depend on what you can store—while this is an approach and a worthy one—depend on yourself. All you need is water, fuel and knowledge of available wild foods in your area. Start with weeds, they are in every climate zone and a brief knowledge of the local weeds is easy. Secondly, wild fungi are everywhere—but be careful, a complete knowledge of all local species is imperative. Join a local mycological society in your area and learn the species. I am going to get hell for this post but I know what I am talking about. Lastly this subject is moot considering the fact that our country and economy will not lay down and die provided we retain our freedom-—another reason to be involved in the political theater and vote this joker in the white house out. ‘Nuff said for now.

A few years back, I opened a large can of vegetable beef soup. Campbells type.

It wasn’t bulging, it smelled totally normal, and the only difference I noted was that it seemed to have lost some of the water - it wasn’t “full”.

Cooked it, ate it, I’m still here.

It was between 6 and 7 yrs old.

Thanks bgill! But I have to say I’m disappointed it took so long.

I believe that to be only practicably in certain locals. I live in a Albuquerque, when you consider the number of people and the amount of edible plants and animals per acre surrounding us the odds of you lasting with out supplemental food is very slim. Land will only support so much life rather its animal, plant or human. And then there’s the problem of clean drink able water.

Wouldn’t a multi-vitamin do a better job than a nutritional drink. Vitamins are cheaper, take up much less storage space, and no worries with excess sugars and sodium.

Agree, we layer our system with local wild life harvesting, barter and share of livestock and produce from farms and our personal gardens. My friend carry okie has educated me on that which you speak as well as a lifetime of private and military survival school educations as to using all resources available.

My long term survival ruck has no food in it. Just spices to enhance the taste of that harvested in the wild.

My triad of personal preparation is the home, the vehicles and afoot.

Good advice to be taken seriously by all, not just peppers.

Thank you, stay safe !

A few years back I had a can of tomato paste go bad, which somewhat surprised me because tomato paste/sauce is pretty acidic.

My absolute worst can swelling problem, has been tomato paste.

Then there’s the problem with the government trying to store all the confiscated foods. When the people get hungry enough, no security would keep them out for very long. How many times have we seen these delivery trucks mobbed. The least little thing sets mobs off now days so just imagine what it’d be like during a disaster.

I'm also a long time prepper. I haven't had a swollen can since the '70s.

Keep reading the thread.

My long term food is from Walton Feed and most of it is good for 20-25 years - hermetically sealed without oxygen.

“It would truly would be SHTF to get me to eat spinach!”

I have various sprout seed - I guess you wouldn’t eat a fresh sprout salad? Those will be my green veggies if TSHTF.

Could be that the acid in the paste eats through the can and it becomes infected somehow.

I’m with you. I also buy those vitamin C drops from Dollar Tree, they taste like candy so you get nutrition and a treat all at once.

Seconding that: back in the late 1980’s, my Squadron deployed to an old, shut-down Air Base in Oklahoma. The Field Mess served a hot breakfast. A buddy of mine showed me the (empty) cans of bacon and powdered eggs. They were dated 1943 and 1945, respectively. Tasted fine. . .

I’m seeing more and more dented cans. I had thought it was from the employees not caring these days but after the thin tuna cans this evening (up thread) it could very well be that all cans are getting thinner. I try to not buy any can that’s dented but sometimes just being bagged dents them so I don’t know until I’m home. Then they go into the fridge immediately and get eaten before they spoil.
