Need Help With Picking Out Books
9-1-2012 | Self

Posted on 09/01/2012 1:21:23 PM PDT by CincyRichieRich

I need help...I am a Vincy Flynn and Brad Thor addict...my wife has brought home from the library, and like Dale Brown books, I see right through their liberal crap...it is hard to find anything to fill the void while Vince and Brad ginn up the next ones...help me if you will with some authors who can hold my interest.

Silva is ok, but I don't care about stealing a Rembrant painting...I like conspiracy, spy, etc.

I will check those out, I need a new detective.

Another series I’ve enjoyed are the Dr. Siri novels by Colin Cotterill.

Now, in a way these are stinking communist books, it’s sort of Quincy in 1970s post US defeat in Laos. And Dr. Siri himself was a commie solider for many a decade.

But somehow the characters are still sweet. There’s a pretty big supernatural element to the stories, as there is in a lot of things I’m running into lately (stories, not real life, not yet anyway!) and I’m sorry but some part of me thinks that’s kind of cheating. I mean, when the dead person comes to you in a dream and reveals who killed them?

It can still make a good story. We did enjoy that TV show “medium” a good deal.

I’m pretty sure Dr. Siri would not be every freeper’s cup of tea, but I’ve liked them.

I still enjoy them. Haven’t read all the earlier ones, though.

If you haven’t read the earlier Ryan stories, you’re in for a treat. Start with Patriot Games and read them in order. (Hunt for Red October was published before Patriot Games, but is after it in the Ryan chronology.)

Great stuff. In my opinion, Clancy started going downhill with The Bear & the Dragon and just got awful after that.

I’ll check them out. I love a good time travel story, so can probably handle the supernatural touches.

The newer ones are up-to-date, though. That gives them a kind of excitement. The technology, the weapons, the current scene politically.

There’s one recent one where the hero finds bin Laden. In the United States. Published before the SEAL raid. One of the dangers of writing about the present.

Let me know what you think!

I guess those are also best read in order, but I think I read the second one first.

All of Joel’s books are good...you have to read the first four or five in order I believe.

Who wrote Term Limits? Vince? That was a really good read IMO.

If anyone wants to read a really good Christian novel, but written with facts, read The Harbinger. Excellent.

Read it. Lots of in-joke stuff about fans who attend conventions. Not being one of them, didn’t really like it that much.

You’re in for a treat if you have only read two of Rosenberg’s. There are several.

If you are into large military techno-thrillers, like 6-8 year World War III varieties...then may I shamelessly recommend my:

If you like spy/espionage novels, the great Charles McCarry is a must, especially his Paul Christopher novels but anything he has written is superb. He is unarguably the greatest American spy novelist and I’d never heard of him until a month ago. I would suggest “The Tears of Autumn” http://www.amazon.com/The-Tears-Autumn-Charles-McCarry/dp/1585676616 to start (if you want to know the “truth” about the Kennedy assassination) or “The Miernik Dossier” http://www.amazon.com/The-Miernik-Dossier-Charles-McCarry/dp/1585677361 which was his first published novel. But anything by McCarry is great.

Mr. McCarry is in his 80s now but his novels read like they were written by a master only yesterday. Although out of print, they were all available at my local library.

I’m also taken with Olen Steinhauer, another great writer, who in an interview turned me on to McCarry, one of his great influences.
