Flying Japan Airlines in the near future? Colonel Sanders will be joining you as the airline rolls out Kentucky Fried Chicken meals onboard flights from Tokyo to the U.S. and Europe.

Japan Airlines and Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan are collaborating for the seventh installment of the airline's Air Series in-flight meal program - temporary restaurant promotions for in-flight catering. Past featured meals have included traditional Japanese fare from Taimeiken and Yoshinoya.

The fast-food meals, which will include a drumstick, boneless chicken breast, coleslaw, lettuce leaves and bread, will be served on flights from December 1 to Feb. 28, 2013. KFC's parent is Yum! Brands (YUM).

KFC is widely popular in Japan, particularly during the Christmas season, according to the press release.

To be clear, the KFC option will be the second meal offered on long-haul international flights. The primary meal will consist of regularly catered cuisine and choices.

Instead of serving bait, they will serve fried, grease-soaked, chicken?

How I loved Yoshinoya when I worked in Japan! A darn good meal of pork cutlets over rice or similar fare for around $4.00. Generous portions even for a hungry gaijin with side dishes like oshinko either included or available for very little extra cost.

Very few women ate there, but my youngest daughter loved it when I took her there with me. So did the construction workers who frequented the place. She got a lot of attention.

Japan’s love of All Things Colonel is what we’d consider insane. They spend +$70 US to order a chicken bucket meal for a family of four for Christmas, months in advance! They love the statues of Col. Sanders and dress him up as Santa; they’ve even thrown one of them in the river during a major soccer tournament. Where they get their notion of a “Christmas cake” — not fruitcake — I can’t imagine.

Honestly, this is a loving nod to American cuisine and pop culture.

I only flew on Japan Air one time. They served salmon mousse (no Monty Python jokes, please!) and the meal was excellent. I wouldn’t mind KFC, though.

What would be even more impressive though, is if they could get the various *Chinese* airlines to start carrying KFC. I love genuine Chinese food, and will eat most anything put in front of me. But brother, lemme tell ya, I met my match on a couple of domestic flights in China.
