Butter vs. Margarine: New Research Reveals Which is Healthier

Margarine isn't better for your heart than butter — it's worse, according to a new analysis of a 40-year-old study. For 50 years, health experts and organizations, including the American Heart Association, have urged people to replace butter and other saturated fats in their diets with vegetable oils to reduce the risk of heart disease. Millions of Americans responded by replacing butter with margarine made from omega-6 polyunsaturated vegetable oils found in corn and safflower oil.

Decades later, however, heart disease is still the leading cause of death in both American men and women, and a recent analysis of data collected from 1966 to 1973 indicates that replacing butter and other saturated fats with vegetable oils may have increased the risk of heart disease instead of reducing it.

Dr. Atkins said this a long time ago. As usual, he was right.

In Woody Allen's movie “Sleeper”, Allen wakes up from a suspended state 200 hundred years to find that tobacco was good for you after all.

Seems like most of the chefs on the cooking shows I watch insist on unsalted butter.

“Saturated fats are healthy fats required by all the cells of the body to maintain their structure,” says Dr. Brownstein.

Amazing. The health “experts” had it all wrong. What a shock.

I used to have a subscription to Cooking Light magazine, still buy an issue now and then. They almost always call for real butter in their recipes, maybe not slathered in pounds of it ala Paula Deen, it but real butter. A lot of their recipes are very good BTW and healthy even with real butter.

Is that because of possible health problems from the salt or to keep it from adding unwanted taste attributes to the recipes? I only ask because the dangers of salt have been so overblown. I'm of the mind that most of the "health" food products aren't as healthy as what the "uninformed" used to eat - they just expanded the market to allow higher prices for a bunch of commodities.

margarine is simply oils squeezed from natural plants. butter is processed mechanically out of milk with whatever amount of who knows what bovine growth hormone is in there ~ particularly with Western cattle.

Read the label. If it contains hydrogenated fats (transfats), throw it away.

Keep in mind that these are the SAME PEOPLE that tell me to wash my hands every time I touch a banister, or push a button in an elevator, or use the bathroom. Or use “sanitizer” to kill germs that are not even a threat, for some reason (not to mention, playing havoc with one’s Endocrine System).

They say not to touch my face with my hands, and never stick foreign (i.e., international, to be pc about it) objects into my mouth. They also said to abstain from alcohol.

I’ve never listened to them since age 3 and I’m still here many decades later, and I DON’T GET SICK.

In this case, they had a hook. Margarine is (or at least) can be MUCH EASIER to spread on bread than butter, so a LOT of people bought into it, and died a young, painful, death listening to them. I WILL NEVER listen to them and I am doing just fine, thank you.

I remember back in the 1950s, most housewives switched to margarine, it was heavily promoted on TV.
