He gave the examples of Cary Grant and Burt Reynolds, so I dont think he meant just stand-ups.
Thanks,
I see that now

I enjoyed Joan Rivers from the Ed Sullivan show in the 60s.
I often wondered if anyone outside of the NY metro area “got” her humor.

When she first started out, Rosanne Barr was funny. So was Paula Poundstone. Then she went lesbo, political and angry. Total turnoff.

There’ve been many funny women over the years. From Gracie Allen,Joan Rivers (way back when) and Gilda Radner...to Bret Butler,Wendy Liebman,Jennifer Saunders and Catherine Tate (the last two are Brits).IIRC Belushi also believed that women weren't funny. He,too, was wrong.

Moms Mabley was a riot!
I wouldn’t give you a plug nickel for male or female today save for Jim Gaffigan and Jeff Foxworthy.
Both tend to “work clean” so that is a hint as to my likes in comedy.

So was Paula Poundstone. Also from that generation were Elayne Boosler and Rita Rudner.

"Elayne Boosler and Rita Rudner"
I don't think either were funny, even in their "prime". The worst modern comedienne has to be Margaret Cho, closely followed by Kathy Griffin and Jeannine Garofalo.
Gays think these women are a scream, so maybe that's why they tailor their material to them.
I enjoyed Ellen Degeneres when she was starting out.
When she "came out", it was gay and political.
Poundstone the same, gay and political are NOT funny.
Rosie O'Donnell also. Gay, ANGRY, uninformed.
Good comediennes IMHO: Gilda Radner
Tina Fey
The woman from Parks and Rec.
And I'll take some heat for this, but Sarah Silverman (in small doses)

Andrea Martin and Catherine O’Hara were both very funny in SCT TV.

The best acting job Lewis ever did was in “The King Of Comedy” where he played the egotistical talk-show host, Jerry Langford.

"got her humor"
That's a very chauvinistic way of thinking. Her comedy, like many other New York comics, translated very well west of the Hudson. Robert Klein also wondered if his New York brand of comedy would translate as well outside the New York metro area. He was stunned to discover people laughed just as hard and in the right places in southern states and elsewhere.

That’s because Jim has been “doing” Jerry his entire career.

I Love Lucy wasn’t funny? That’s ridiculous. I will admit that as I get on in years, Ricky is even funnier than Lucy but in her prime, she was something else.
