The German man, 50, was with his wife and three children when the gondola they were in and a "vaporetto", or water bus, collided.
The water bus, which carries the public around the canals of the city, was either docking or leaving the Rialto stop when the collision occurred.
A three-year-old girl is being treated for head injuries.
She was taken to hospital in nearby Padua.
The girl and the rest of her family were thrown into the water by the force of the collision.

Considering the number of trips, the accident rate is very low. Gondolas are very slow of course, and the vapporettos (water-bus) aren’t speedy either.
What’s the saying, “see Venice and die”?...

The gondolier was detracted from his surroundings while lighting his cigarette.
A jogger could out run a water bus easily {if they had a place to run LOL}. I took about an hour ride up The Grand Canal and got to see a lot of the city that way. I made two Med Sea deployments. It was our best Liberty Port in my opinion.
I could think of one real good reason for pulling into Naples. It beat pulling into Taranto.
