As automakers race to make cheaper electric cars with greater battery range, General Motors is working on one that can go 200 miles per charge at a cost of about $30,000, a top company executive said.

Vice President of Global Product Development Doug Parks wouldn’t say when or if such a car will be built, however. …

The 200-mile car would cost about the same as the current Volt, and it would match the range and be far cheaper than Tesla Motors’ $71,000, all-electric Model S. The Model S can go up to 265 miles on a single charge. …

Still hasn’t gotten out of “development hell”, as they might say in Hollyweird? Their CEO said the exact same thing last year.

And no union activity either!

Give me one that can get 400 miles on a charge and will recharge in the time it takes to fill the tank.

There are two dimensions.

1. How far does it go - 200 miles? Not impressed.
2. How long does it take to charge it? Three days? Fagetaboutit.

Mileage may vary if you use...

the Air Conditioner,

or the heater,

or the radio,

or the windows,

or the GPS,

or the headlights......

Yeah, and some people are working on room temperature fusion and immortality. I’m writing a novel that’ll sell 100 million copies, too.

Yeah, elec cars are getting better, but practical?

They don’t do well in the 115 degree s/w deserts or the Minnisota cold. They do quite well in places San Francisco, Hollywood, etc.

Exactly! Even at 200 miles, unless you can recharge in less than ten minutes for another 200 miles, it is nothing but a toy for the ultra wealthy who can afford a status symbol as well as a car that actually is functional.

Government Motors is having a little trouble selling the electric model they have, even heavily subsidized by taxpayer largess

Yep. I've never understood why some of the worst ideas, (Marxism, for example, and electric cars,) are the most persistent.

"Give me one that can get 400 miles on a charge and will recharge in the time it takes to fill the tank."

Yup...show me an electric pickup that gets the same performance as my F-150 4x4, with the same off-road capabilities, costs the same or less to maintain, has a 400-mile per charge range, recharges as quickly as a fill-up, doesn't crap out in the cold weather, and costs the same or less than other conventional pickups, and I'd consider it. Oh yeah, and isn't heavily subsidized on the backs of the 53%.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

I get twice that from my Camry — city driving. And my “recharge time” at the fuel pump is about 11 hours and 57 minutes less.
