Apparently, COST-OF-LIVING didn’t figure into the calculations, just state & local taxes.

Having said that, compared to most, I’m thinking Ole-Miss and Looo-zanna probably have much lower cost of living, lower costs for homes, acreage, etc. And all the hunting and fishing you can bear to stand.

How was AL left out? I know several people who’ve retired to AL.

Indeed. Alabama is a lovely state with a temperate climate--not the hothouse that is Florida. It's nice to see four seasons instead of one.

If Virginia continues on its path to becoming a Maryland clone, that's where I'll be going.

I’ll have to retire without Mrs Smith. She’s not attached to our house of 10 years. It’s just a place to raise kids. The neighborhood is changing though, and we’ll likely leave in 10 or 15 years, but she’s wants to retire (or so I’ve overheard) to the upper west side of manhattan. She loves the theater and loves being n the city. I wonder what she’ll do without a car. You don’t need ones the city, but you need one for those shopping trips outside the city.

I live in NH. The winters help keep the riff raff down. Please don’t send us any more riff raff. There’s already too much. And remind them that the winters are brutal and endless. Please.

I’m not sure you can actually retire to a Waffle House. Not that it’s a bad idea, mind you...

I agree with you. I would like to move there and stay there. All of the folks that I met appeared to have good sense.

It makes you feel alive.

I sure fell in love with Southern Utah, specifically Kanab, during my recent vacation. I'll still retire in Texas for family reasons, but I could see taking extended trips to Kanab.

Kanab's within a 2 hour drive of six (or more) national parks/monuments. Prices didn't seem out of the ordinary.

Slings, you cannot retire to a Waffle House, but who eats early bird specials?

Anyway, that’s my answer. Unless someone comes up with a nationwide chain of cat cafes by the time you are ready for retirement....

WH doesn’t have early bird specials, possibly because they are open 24 hours. They do have a senior menu, IIRC.

Florida is pretty friendly for retirees. Yeah, but it's full of New Yorkers and mosquitos.
The unofficial nickname of Spring Hill is New Long Island.

My dad had the common sense to bring us here in 1978. I was 10. We moved out of Pennsylvania.

Sent my child to college in Georgia (NGCSU in Dahlonega). Met a Georgia boy and they got married the day she graduated. They have a wonderful hous with room for me. After the last round of layoffs, I said to heck with it. Moved and am very happy

Just got back from Alaska. Beautiful place, great people.
But cheapest? That’s crazy.
Everything is expensive up there.
The 900 dollar oil bonus check doesn’t make up for it.

Subway 5 dollar footlong? It’s 8 bucks.

My daughter got a fabulous education at North Georgia. The reason we sent her there was she wanted to be a nurse (channeling my mother I think). To do nursing in California (where she had been born and raised...long story think high tech) one had to put their name into a lottery plus have all the prerequisites done before they MIGHT get in. I knew students who had four year biology (both macro and micro) degrees who never made it in and so went into the work force at places like Genentech and Biorad. So long story short, NGCSU has a top rated nursing school. It was less expensive to send her there (even with out of state tuition) than hope she night get in at in California.

End result is she graduated with honors, passed her boards first time out with flying colors, and now does home based care. She works in the field of gerontology and gives the kind of care to her patients that I wished all people could receive. She deals with patients, families, doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies. She hates the onslaught of O-care and fears that it may eventually drive her from the profession she is so good at and the patients she loves and cares for.

Anyway enough blather from a proud parent.

Good luck to your’s at college. I hope they are going to a nice conservative school

I’ll keep our scorpions and snakes. You can keep your snakes and alligators.

I loved the extra ones you added to the reply. And I must say I have enjoyed the times I’ve been to Florida.

Same here in FL. Also, you’re never more than a few hours away from a beach/the ocean and it’s pretty much year-round warm. No state income tax; the old intangible tax has been eliminated. Only thing you have to watch out for is property taxes, which can be awesome, and not in a good way.

North Carolina is not a low tax state, but they do not tax military retirement or social security income...If you are sexually active consider The Villages in Florida— Highest STD rate in the nation.(Medicare covers it....enjoy)
