NFL to Discuss Expanding Rules That Protect QBs
ABC News ^ | November 14, 2013 | HOWARD FENDRICH

Thanks to a broken collarbone on a run-of-the-mill sack, the Green Bay Packers are without Aaron Rodgers. Their rivals in the NFC North, the Chicago Bears, are without Jay Cutler thanks to a bum leg, which also wasn't the result of some sort of illegal hit.

Game after game, NFL quarterbacks get sacked, get hurt — and miss starts. Of the 15 games on this week's schedule, nine — 60 percent — feature at least one team that has been forced to change its quarterback because of injury this season.

One of the two teams with a bye, St. Louis, lost its No. 1 guy, 2010 top overall draft pick Sam Bradford, for the season. Bradford, who tore a ligament in his left knee last month, is one of nine quarterbacks on injured reserve in 2013, the second most through 10 weeks in any of the past 15 seasons, according to STATS.

The NFL has changed the rules so much that football is almost painful to watch. Watching a QB run for 20 yards or more in a close game and watching defenders afraid to tackle him because they might get a penalty is ridiculous. I am all for rules that protect defenseless players from late hits and cheap shots but I have seen time after time a QB ducks or evades a tackler and the defender gets penalized for hitting high or hitting low etc. Or a QB runs for the sidelines and as soon as he is about to be tackled he steps out of bounds and gets a 15 yard penalty.

The rules have gotten so stupid that it is almost not tackle football anymore.

I saw Tony Romo get hit with a helmet when he was already on the ground a few weeks ago, no penalty.

Is it okay to beat up a bad team?

How about quarterbacks sticking to passing and handing off the ball? A “running quarterback” may have a spectacular season or two, but their career won’t be long.

Get rid of the motorcycle helmets and the ballistic armament and go back to what real football players used to wear.

ABS brakes don't make people safer because they just drive faster. Same thing with protective gear. Take away the gear, and the players' sense of self-preservation will take care of the rest.

Seeing this reminds me of the legendary linebacker, Jack Lambert. When asked for his opinion on new rules to protect the quarterback, he said, “maybe quarterbacks should start wearing dresses.”

The NFL has to protect their most valuable assets and besides the TV contract and the taxpayer financed stadiums, the QB’s are the most valuable.

It is no different than any other corporation.

So... From the first sentence, they lost me. On a run of the mill sack, Rodgers broke a collarbone. What does that tell you? No rule change short of banning sacks would have prevented it... Frankly, I was shocked he broke anything after that sack.

Well I felt that way a long time even before that Vanderbilt game.

Didn’t BobG3 state that he would be trying to get penalties by running on the sidelines and hoping for a call?

Yea, hitting a QB with a helmet is one thing but tackling a runner trying to get to the marker is another. If the QB decides to run, he’s a runner and will get treated as one. In the modern game, the position of QB has evolved to be more of a skill position, reading defenses and creating misdirection, not a position that is supposed to be taking abuse on every snap. Telling defenses that they can’t treat a running QB like they hit a fullback is a bleeping joke. Here’s an idea, telling the QB that if you run, you can’t bitch about getting your knee splintered. If you stay behind the LOS, you get the benefit of better protection.
Defenders don’t mind rules, just keep one set and give them the benefit of the doubt.

“Well, Hell just make it flag football.”

Roger Goodell would ban flags the minute a player grabs one and breaks a fingernail.

Yep.
The concussion issue is a very real; tragic thing. Terry Bradshaw and Brett Favre are the latest players to come out with the symptoms.
The players are so much faster and stronger now. The brain hasn’t grown protection in the same manner.
Bradshaw says he wouldn’t let his son play football today.
