I looooave him
(Ok, Yankee Doodle Dandy is one of my favorites.)

I seem to remember that before Cagney died, he said something like if a movie were made of his life he would want Michael J Fox playing him.
Anyone remember that, or did I imagine it.

In my mind, the penultimate gangster movie of that era. Tons of cliches and I love every one of them.

By far the best Cagney movie, one of the greatest comedic movie performances, ever, IMHO.

If you will go to Cagney's acceptance speech of his American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award on youtube, you will see he never said "You dirty rat!"

He said, "Judy... Judy, Judy!"

“Yankee Doodle Dandy” was a classic. Cagney had a unique style of dance that was amazing. I think that I have heard that he was also a very nice man. I believe that he also supported Ronald Reagan’s campaign.

Here’s the scene. He really said, “Come out and take it you dirty, yellow-bellied rat or I’ll give it to you through the door!”

White Heat is the film that turned me into a Cagney fan. Really fine gangster movie, with a lot of depth to the part.

Re:

Delightful film, Cagney's last one until Ragtime and a real comic jewel in his crown. At alsolikelife.com is a wonderful essay on this film:

"Is it backhanded praise to say that One, Two, Three is a movie you don’t even have to look at to enjoy? For the first half hour I just wanted to close my eyes and let the non-stop flow of dialogue carry me along. While Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond are known for their wit (“You will send papers to East Berlin with blond lady in triplicate.” “You want the papers in triplicate, or the blond in triplicate?” “See what you can do.”) it’s the musicality of the banter that captivates me: the compulsive clicking of a subordinate’s heels, Cagney’s numerical method of dictating agendas to associates, and countless little moments where the words turned against their speakers, batted around like a beach ball."

Mmm... Virginia Maayyo.

"How ya doin', Parker?"

"It's stuffy in here, I need some air."

"Oh, stuffy, huh? I'll give ya a little air."

Well, I do believe it is true even if it appears to be pure Hollywood Press Release Fodder. I recall reading it from several sources back in 1984 when Cagney played his last role "Terrible Joe Moran" a TV Movie.

And from Michael J. Fox To Play Young Cagney March 31, 1986, story that said: "A few days before the death Sunday of James Cagney, it was announced that Michael J. Fox will play the title role in "Young Jimmy Cagney," a TV movie that traces Cagney's career from age 15 up to his first role, 1936's ''Sinner's Holiday." Cagney, 86, died at his farm in upstate New York. He had been suffering from diabetes for years."

The TV Movie was never made--
