The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Coffee grinders sure come in handy.
You wouldn't believe how much heat that generates, though... reducing regular sugar crystals to superfine powder...

You don't need hemlock to off yourself. Plant a mountain laurel, and some Foxglove, or jicama, and castor beans..
Glas your Tycoons tomatoes are doing well. I am putting my trombonicnos in a smart pot next to my cattle panel grow arches tomorrow. Tomorrow, and the next day are good days to plant above ground plants.
Since Johnny doesn't have a donut service route, I'll use these substitute buns.
They're pretty, but could you frost mine with maple frosting, and put bacon sprinkles on it to pretty it up just a bit more?
/johnny
My dad loved glazed honey buns. We had a day old bread store right by the house and he would but them 10 for $1. We really miss that bread store when we moved here, we bought fresh loaves of Sara Lee breads for $0.95 and day olds 3-5 for $1.00, buns, wheat or white, 2for $1.00. We would go in there and buy $5 worth and fill our freezer with it. Those were the days, my friend.
I dont miss the city, but I miss many of the businesses there, and our church.
Yes. We used to take a few sweet potatoes from the previous year and put them in a dark area. They would grow shoots and we would take them and plant them on a terrace. Get ready for long vines.
I use molasses tubs that farmers have for their cows. Drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage. I have a nice crop of carrots in one now.
Have you tried Donut Wheel on 105 near Frazier? I like their donutz better than Shipley’s, but I don’t get that far into town very often, only when I am running the pawn shops.
Did you accumulate any more trash treasures this morning?
Similar in flavor to cilantro and very interesting and pretty is papalo. There are two types. I like the one that looks like a tiny aspen type tree. The leaves are round. It is quite pungent and not for everyone but cilantro lovers should give it a try.
No, I did see some office chairs (with casters), lawn mowers (with motors, and wheels) hot water heaters, tires w/rims (big honker ones), furniture, .People were really putting stuff out today as it was the first day of Clean Up.
I decided that you would have more fun coming to the Hill Country during the three weeks of the City Wide Cleanup, than going to Fredericksburg for touristy stuff.
I remember one year, my husband dragged home all these bowling pins, and balls..I was like, "What the h#ll are you going to do with those?" He wanted to build a backyard bowling alley..Sheesh.
Anyway, I had to work on my fence today, plant tomatoes, go to my Mom's, and oops, the sun came out, and by the time I got back home, it was 115 in my greenhouse..
Have you ever tried tapping a box elder (no, I'm not kidding).
Do you add cornstarch when you make your powdered sugar?
“Have you tried Donut Wheel on 105 near Frazier?”
I try not to get on 105 for anything. If I have to go to Home Depot, I take 336 from my house and circle around to 105 so I’m on 105 going west to Home Depot.
It’s Shipley’s for me since it’s right around the corner from my house.
Thank you, I’ll be planting those stems today.
Nope. Never heard of tapping box elder for sap to make syrup.

???
Hubby (yeah the same one who wanted to build the backyared bowling alley) and I tapped one back in the 70's. More work than buying maple syrup at the store.
Not sure why you put question marks. Maybe for the way I get to 105? Go like I’m going to Walmart/Lowes on 336 but keep going and run into 105, turn left onto 105 and Home Depot/Office Depot is up a bit and on the right. Chick fil A is there, too and bunches of other stores but you know that. I stay away from the crappy traffic at Hwy. 45 and 105. That is a funnel of cars going all directions.
I know you are talking about a donut place on 105 near Frazier. 105 is split there so if you are on Frazier is donut place on west 105 street from 45 or east 105 from Frazier?
If I didn’t have the garden’s MUST DO chores, I’d be sitting on my backside. With my knees, it’s too painful to do much so my day is scheduled around a few minutes on them here and there throughout the day and that’s not enough to lose any weight so it’s a vicious cycle.
Don’t give up on old seeds. Broadcast your old seeds into an area of dirt see what happens. I potted up some 15 year old peanuts a few days ago and they all have come up which is simply thrilling. Also, tried for two years to get chamomille to grow with no luck but last month about 5 popped up after being totally neglected since last summer.
I was suckered into buying a Burpee self watering seed tray last year - ha, never again. The little potting soil pellets were too hard and never did soak up water. Another tray was too small to get the plants out of without ripping them to pieces. Money down the drain. It’s much better and cheaper and kinder to the plants to stick to the tried and true method of recycling old cups and kitchen containers.
I went on my yearly trek to Home Despot (like that) last week and came home with more NOT NEEDED seeds. Normally, I get the cheap 10-50 cent Walmart seeds but was suckered into the pretty packages. But it appears the cukes planted a couple weeks ago aren’t coming up so going to try a new variety with these expensive $1.50+ seeds. My only excuse is the new plants will produce seeds so no need to buy any more in the future (yeah, right, snort).
Oooh, just saw the most beautiful blue jay outside the puter window! Ok, off to the garden again for a few minutes to measure more paths.
- is split there so if you are on Frazier is donut place on west 105 street from 45 or east 105 from Frazier?=
Its about 100yds from where the split comes back together, on the wide part of 105. Take Frazier south towards 105, right on the westbound part of 105, and as it merges, the donut place is immediately on the right. You can get there with only right hand turns. Leave there going right on 105 to next light, which is Dallas St, I think, it’s the street your computer guy is on. Follow this street, past your computer guy to light at Frazier, left on Frasier to 336 and left at 336 to your street. All easy right turns and only 2 lefts at redlights. I just like the flavor better there, and find Shipleys to be a little too chewy, rubbery. If you like Shipleys, don’t bother with the drive. I like donutz, so I try every one I find!
Why not go past Walmart two lights(I think) and take a left on Longmire(where the new Aldi’s is) and come out at 105 across the street from the strip mall that contains HD? Cuts out several miles and lots of traffic on 336 and 105.
I’ve been in the shop for a few hours cleaning and organizing the woodshop side. Feels good to actually get something done that I can see. I even cut some wood from a pallet the I took apart yesterday and made a shelf under a roll-around tool bench.
Had the pups out there with me. Gracie has to be on a chain when I’m in the shop because she runs after people walking, and chases cars. I got a 32ft chain that keeps her 3ft from the street. It allows her free run of the shop and driveway, and can go to the edge of the rear patio area, and around front a bit.
I need to go back out after lunch and take apart the make shift seed starting greenhut and get it of of the way and continue looking for things to do.
