you started this mess by posting a vanity crying that Mr. Mick upset you by singing Under My Thumb right after his girlfriend committed suicide. Others, besides me, thought this was silly beyond belief.

As I thought; you wanted to play "artist one-up" and I'm not playing; I'm playing "this is how I felt and no one else is in charge of how I feel" so now you're mad.

Your misinterpretation: His having sung the song years before has nothing whatsoever to do with the suicide; nor did he voluntarily order the recording to be played this week. You leapt to these negative conclusions, while my point was much simpler. I feel sadness for the death of a clothing artist whose work was beautiful. The lyric in retrospect was eerie, even mentioning clothes. Who is to blame for her death? He is not.

My band played a wedding once where the groom requested it. I stopped dead in my tracks and asked, "Really?!"

Which Sting song are you referring to -- can't recall.

Your experience sounds like a wedding I went to where the first dance was to "Yesterday" by the Beatles -- "Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, now it looks as though they're here to stay; oh, I believe in yesterday." We were peeing ourselves sniggering.

I don’t think anything of the kind. I felt sad. I hope he doesn’t make other people feel sad unnecessarily on his upcoming tour. That is all.

When W Bush ran against Kerry, Bruce Springsteen was giving the left some heavy duty “politicin’” support. Alice Cooper came out in an interview when asked about Springsteen (I think they were hoping he’d agree) and he said something like, “anyone who listens to a musician about political views is a bigger idiot than the musician!”

I don’t think so. I didn’t know either of them (the gig was a referral from a friend of a friend) but he seemed (almost obsessively) devoted to her. So the vibe I got was (just shy of) that of a stalker not chauvinist. We never crossed paths again so I don’t know how things turned out (hopefully no suicides or murders LOL).

So, Alice Cooper was acknowledging the risk that a lot of voters are idiot enough to be influence by pop culture, as we often observe here on FR!

I wasn’t referring to you. I was referring to all the women who have dated Jagger.

But I just hope for the sake of her beauty and fragility that he avoids some of those types of lyrics going forward,

<><><><><

That’s gonna be hard to do, given the stones catalog.

It’s clear you identify with this situation in some fashion. I don’t in this instance, but I get it.

I don’t think its a big secret that Mick Jagger has a speech defect. He can’t say no. :-)

Every Breath You Take

miss marmelstein had mentioned that song upstream and it triggered a reminiscence. I find it interesting the emotional “tags” we humans place on music. For him that song represented his devotion to his mate. To me it triggers a picture of an almost comically obsessive male marking his territory.

Totally OT but regarding Under My Thumb - I don’t have a “tag” for it, no deep burning recollection indelibly tying tune to event. But I have played the song - many times.

One of the things one must do when playing covers is to try to remain faithful to the tune while simultaneously giving it your personal spin. Listen to this Robin Trower tune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZWc8ybB8TM - now imagine playing Under My Thumb that way (faster tempo, power chords, hard rock edge) - that’s how I prefer to play it.

Sorry for drifting off topic ;’)

Thank you. Seems that having any "sympathy" for Mick's effect on his audience in an upcoming tour (that his contract says he must complete or face more than $10 million in fines) is verboten on this thread, even though many of the posts seem to think I'm condemning him. It's a tragedy all the way around.

If he sings the woman-bashing songs in the upcoming tour, he will be criticized in the media.
If he avoids singing the woman-bashing songs in the upcoming tour, he will be criticized in the media.

He's between his rock and a hard place now.

Not at all. You're probably one of the few on this thread who thinks with the artist brain. Thanks for the link to Robin Trower.

I agree; "I'll be watching you..." does sound like the crazy jealous type...

God, when do these stupid mis-quotes and urban legends ever end. That song in about Warren Beatty. How do I know its not about Jagger......He’s singing back-up in the damn song!

I'm well aware of that, had you bothered to read further into the thread. Maybe you should take a deep breath, go take a nap or something. You're just a tad overwrought.

Not off topic at all! The emotional connections we make with songs are one of the great joys of life. Now, I read the Wiki entry of Every Breath You Take and it seems that Sting did say that it was about his angry obsession over a lost girlfriend. I read it this morning and have the memory of gnat so maybe I got it wrong. I have a good friend who is convinced it’s a song about the FBI, CIA and the KGB. Of course, he thinks Under My Thumb is one of the musical numbers from the movie Tom Thumb...

Overwringing is rampant on this thread. It’s starting to remind me of the furor on FR over Michael Jackson or Anna Nicole Smith. SMH.

Appears it's mostly about feelings and projection.

Next we will hear that songs about...well..the ups and downs of male female reactivity, are verboten, especially if the spouse of an artist does them selves in.

Interesting story about the husband’s request and very creepy. But it’s a better song than the one usually requested: my much hated Evergreen.

Oh my goodness gracious.

I’m sorry I read this thread and I hope I forget that you attached this song to her suicide!

I still admire and listen to MJ music. He was brilliant musically, warped personally, as so many noted artists are wont to be. I’m capable of separating the two. His early life was not easy and he was very likely abused himself. That does not excuse his apparent later behavior, for which he is now answering having left this world.

Anna Nicole Smith, no strong opinion. She worked with what she had to get to where she got. Grasping for fame and fortune is seldom pretty.
