Love it or Hate it: Where Do You Come Down on Kale, Beets, Okra, Brussels Sprouts and Cilantro?

Cilantro was described as an aphrodisiac in the Arabian Nights, but that fact fails to impress those who hate it with a passion.

Cilantro was described as an aphrodisiac in "The Arabian Nights," but that fact fails to impress those who hate it with a passion.

Julia Child famously told Larry King that it has a "dead taste," and she would pick it out of a dish "and throw it on the floor." The pro-cilantro crowd is just as vocal, if not as descriptive. You can find the debate anywhere you find cilantro and the people who meticulously pick it out of their food.

We explore the adoration and hatred of this herb, and some other divisive foods, in our latest edition of Love It, Hate It. To get started, we asked staff writers Joan Morris and Martha Ross to square off on cilantro.

“That is why I love cilantro - it is - to me - the essence of freshness and spring-time.”

Yes, it is. I tried this recipe the other day:
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchens/chicken-tostadas-recipe.html

It uses cilantro in the chicken, and salsa cruda, and as a garnish, and also dried coriander in the refries, lol. It was very good.

Beets, nope!
Kale? Wha’ d’at?
Brussel Sprouts ... yes, with cheese, butter, etc.
Okra ... as ‘my special cook’ uses it in Gumbo, or batter-fried.
Cilantro, nope!

I agree. I love cilantro in Mexican dishes, tacos, ceviche, pico de gallo, etc. We grow it in our garden. I use it in salads as a garnish instead of parsley all the time.

Food snobs can go stick their noses up somewhere else. I’ll eat what I like, no matter what some food elitists say.

We live 75 miles from the nearest grocery store. Every time we go to St. George we load up on cilantro.

WOW! You presume to call someone you DON’T know a liar about what they EAT? What they like and why? I’ve never eaten dog crap either and I don’t have to taste it to know I don’t like it. Have you tasted every food item in the world, does nothing repulse you visually or texturally? How bout if I presume to call YOU a liar about living in Florida, or being retired, or even being a Conservative? And people say Free Republic hasn’t changed in the past couple of years!!! With all the unprovoked personal attacks I think half of the membership is sleeper trolls.
I CAN have it both ways- I CAN say I don’t eat things I’ve never tasted.
If you presume to call fellow Freepers ‘liars’ you had best post proof or be prepared to be called a liar about everything you say here.

Kale: Never tried it. Just grew some, but the bugs got to it first. Maybe next year.
Okra: Yuck
Brussels Sprouts - yum!
Beets - like them if they are pickled.
Cilantro. UGH!! Keep it away from me!
