How do YOU explain consciousness?

Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Man is unique among God's creation...He imparted his attributes in us...

As C.S. Lewis supposedly said: “You do not have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.”

Just how does the consciousness evolve according to Darwinian theory ?

The point is that "God did it" doesn't explain the nature of consciousness any more than it explains the orbit of if Mercury.

How does it work?

That doesn’t explain anything. How does it work?

You mean you feel that it doesn’t. Same goes for Mercury’s orbit. Mistaking subjectivity for objectivity is something that we all have to avoid when going into the scientific arena.

God created our consciousness...when he imparted his attributes (feeling, emotion, love, joy, peace, anger, patience, kindness) to us

Maybe you need to ask God ?

So you think that asking for evidence, specifics, and mechanics is "subjectivity"?

Why would one ever read a science book with your attitude, if the answers are already known?

I asked how consciousness worked, since you claimed to know already.

That's it? That's the explanation?

How do black holes work then? Where did dark matter came from? How do photons form?

Lemme guess...

So how does consciousness work in an atheist mind?

What evolutionary process achieved consciousness...

Not sure how consciousness is proof of God.

It’s not clear what you mean by consciousness.

For example, general anesthetic cause unconsciousness. So, it is neurophysiological and can be altered by drugs.

But my guess is you mean something different by consciousness.

I went through the motions, and tried to pretend I believed, but in the end I decided to quit lying to myself and accept the fact that I just didn't believe, and couldn't fool myself into doing so. With age came a growing lack of concern for what other people thought, so I quit worrying about it.

Same here. I came to the conclusion that using the God answer to explain away every puzzle and mystery was really just code for "I don't know."

I mean, why do ear mites and heartworms exist? Why does the moon always seem to show the same side to us? Why is so much of the Earth uninhabitable to humans? Religious people start with the assumption that God must have his reasons, and a lot of the time they let that be answer enough. But all it really means is "I don't know."

I thought Will was a Catholic in the 80’s?

Will has been a bit disingenuous, or even dishonest, to hide this for so long. It was clearly self serving for him to pretend otherwise for decades.

I wonder how he explains to himself how everything got here?

Maybe he reads too many comments from so called Christian conservatives that are based in hatred.........I don't know........At least he's honest about it.

I have no idea.

"God did it" doesn't explain consciousness any more than it explains gravity.

Einstein explained gravity with general relativity. Since you claim to know how consciousness works, please explain it.

I think that is a great explanation. Instead of just saying “God did it”, I became comfortable with just saying “I don’t know.”

I get the impression that the excessive formality is a form of stoicism.

So if I asked you to explain the origin of the moons of Mars, you’d just say “God did it”? No more explanation needed?

I realized early on that theists love these debates because in order for an atheist to defend atheism (to a theist's satisfaction) they have to be experts in neurology, quantum physics, evolutionary biology, philosophy, and psychology. Theists, however, need only have their God Did It sign and it's like a one-size fits all dress by Omar the Tentmaker.

Some of the more talkative ones will try to posit explanations for things like animal suffering or hostile climates that bloom from their deep-seated assumption that whatever makes sense to them is probably right, and that God thinks pretty much the same way they do. But no matter how they slice it, in the end it comes down to what another poster just said, "Ask God," which is usually the closest they come to admitting they don't know either.
