America loves K-cups, but instant coffee rules the world

I was there back in the 90s and was introduced to pressed coffee. I was sold. The food in general?..not that great.

I got one. Liked the coffee. But 2 cups for my wife and I every day comes to $60/month for coffee.

You can grind and fill your own K-cups to use with the machine. Much cheaper and you get whatever delicious coffee you prefer. Eight o’clock makes a good bean to grind for the process. But you can go really exotic if you like. The water temp is perfect for brewing.

I have a Keurig and love it. Wasted too much coffee before. Sometimes the price of the cups is a bit much unless, as mentioned, you Costco it. But I love New Mexico pinion coffee, and the answer to this is the Solofill system. They make a fine gold filter cup that fits in the Keurig without having to alter it, and a grinder unit that is set up to fill the Solofill cup.

There is at least one good way to use instant coffee ... making a special coffee flavored ‘faux ice cream’. Freexe two bananas cut into one inch chunks. Pour the chunks into a food processor, with two tablespoons of French vanilla creamer (liquid, Nestlé’s) and one heaping teaspoon of instant coffee. Churn the stuff until the motor starts to struggle and serve. Delicious!

Wait! Coffee ground and eggshells are one of the few things I let down my disposal. That’s what they taught us. Is it wrong?

The Keurig machines are pretty amazing. They are like something out of the Jetsons. We don't have flying cars yet but we have coffee in a pod.

I like the way you eject the magazine, insert the pod, slam the magazine shut and push the button. Then you have to line up the empty cup to "catch" the coffee before it causes a mess. That's often the most challenging part.

I put the Keurig machine right up there with the iPod and iPhone as one of the most innovative inventions in the history of mankind. If Apple came up with it first, they'd own the coffee market too.

I abhor badly brewed coffee and instant... I grind and then brew my Bulletproof coffee in a german bonavita... if I’m feeling lazy, I pop a capsule in my nespresso. Coffee and italian shoes... my lasting vices.

There is nothing better than a freshly brewed cup of camp coffee after spending the night in a tent. It’s heavenly.

I am going to try this recipe. I don’t have the vanilla creamer. What subsitute have you tried? Always have bananas getting soft around her and instant Vietnamese coffee for my bugout bag.

Thank-you for this post. I am really enjoying it. I have no idea what these brands of coffee are, but it’s fun to learn about them and all the various ways people prepare their own coffee.

Coffee grounds and egg shells do not belong down the disposer. You’re asking for trouble.

Also avoid fat, grease, rice, bones, large fruit pits, fibrous fruits and vegetables, anything in large quantities.

These pod things are an incredibly expensive and wasteful way to make a friggin’ cup of coffee. Even my favorite coffee, Chock full o’Nuts, has succumbed to this ridiculous craze.

The coffee's good and it's fast. Some of us are willing to pay for that.

Why is that an issue for you?

It's no different from buying a Prius or an F-350. People value things differently.

You can use a couple tablespoons of cream or condensed milk. Eagle Brand might be a bit too sweet, but a heaping tablespoon of Eagle Brand would work. You can add teaspoons of milk if the machine binds up. I could not believe how good the stuff was when I tried it. What a way to get kids to eat things that are good for them! I got the ideas from Clean & Delicious, a website. The Lady there made mint chocolate chip using frozen bananas, a heaping handful of fresh spinach (I used baby spinach the first time I tried that one), a quarter teaspoon of peppermint flavoring and two tablespoons of coconut milk! She added tiny chocolate chips at the end. I used too many chips in my first batch. Live and learn ... the coffee faux cream is absolutely tongue biting good.
