8 stars whose box-office draw is nosediving
NY Post ^ | 06.14.2014

With an opening weekend take of $28 million, Tom Cruise’s new sci-fi film “Edge of Tomorrow” — which debuted June 6 — did even worse than his last sci-fi movie, 2013’s “Oblivion.” In the last eight years, Cruise has had only one hit (2011’s “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol”). It looks like he’s nearing the end of his run as a major movie star, though we’ll see how “Mission: Impossible 5” does when it comes out next year.

Not surprising when they appear in the majority of movies that are made. Over exposure in my opinion. And let’s face it, the stars today, both male and female, can’t hold a candle to the stars of days gone by.

It couldn’t happen to a nicer group of libs.

Pretty sure Adam Sandler and Vince Vaughn are not liberals.

Maybe this is why George is said to be toying with the idea of dabbling into politics. It would make sense as the next step. It certainly worked for Schwartznegger. Arnold came out with a movie earlier this year, well made, but it failed to excite many people and didn’t last long in the theater.

Perhaps I am stating the obvious; but, all of these guys are getting, or have gotten, older. No movie star maintains their hold at the box office once they get past a certain age. New guys usually move in; however, since the new guys seem to be metrosexuals, I’m not sure we actually have much future in the way of “masculine” movie stars.

George Clooney’s best movie was O Brother Where Art Thou. I can watch that over and over. I know most of the lines by now and can say them along with the actors. :)

Clooney and Damon. What, nobody wants to see Oceans 20?

I'm not sure playing the "weird freaky pedophile" angle on Wonka helped him any.

The cannibal Wonka in "Epic Movie" felt safer...

Say what you will about Cruise's personal life but he's a professional who knows how to make good movies - same with Mel Gibson. He's also pretty apolitical - something I really appreciate from movie stars, especially when compared to the supersaturated left-wing views of almost the entire movie industry.

Genius and madness sometimes travel the same road together.

Besides aging, Jim Carrey has the problem of his extreme liberal, gun grabbing views, overly expressed to the public.
Jim has been quite the vulgar louse on Twitter. He ususally follows his insults with dumb little emoticons:)

I’m guessing that in today’s homo Hollywood, males tend to get discarded as they lose their boyish looks.

The top female actresses the age of these guys are still doing quite well.

i agree... unlike Daniel Day-Lewis who seems to take a role maybe every five years... now he is an actor... artiste... and he is my favorite... i also like Colin Firth--there is something about him that appeals to me...

Actually it’s none. As much as Hollywood likes to push the stars that’s not why people see movies. Plot/ topic is the #1 driver to get people into a movie. Stars rise and fall basically on how well they’re matching the whims of the masses in the scripts they say yes to. The biggest source of “fall” is that eventually the stars get tired of making the same movie over and over, so they try something different, but the people actually do want to watch the same movie over and over, so they don’t go to the different movies.

I think the problem with “Edge of Tomorrow” was the title of the movie.
............
I saw that movie last night. I thought it was pretty good.

I think Johnny Depp ruined himself with make up. Even in his pirate garb he looks feminine.

Hmm, let’s see:

1. Tom Cruise - I’ve never been much of a fan. When he was younger, a friend of mine used to joke “you ever see that one movie where Tom Cruise plays the cocky young guy?”

2. George Clooney - Clooney plays himself every time. He’s sort of like Glenn Ford or Jimmy Stewart were in that sense, except he’s not nearly as talented or likeable as those two greats.

3. Russell Crowe - Crowe’s a great actor in the right part. Loved him in L.A. Confidential. Not sure what the issue is here. Bad movie choices, maybe?

4. Colin Farrell - Handsome guy, never been too impressed with his acting (of what I have seen, anyway).

5. Adam Sandler - Sandler just isn’t very funny to me. I admit Happy Gilmore had me busting a gut in places, but it was usually because of the other characters. Still, I’ll probably go see his next simply because he’s an openly Republican actor working in Hollyweird.

6. Johnny Depp - Depp is enormously talented, but it really feels like he’s been (mostly) mailing it in since he got the Pirates gig. I also think maybe it’s time for he and Tim Burton to part ways. Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood were fantastic, but the duo has had more stinkers (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dark Shadows, etc.) than winners (Sweeney Todd) in recent years.

7. Vince Vaughn - I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Vince Vaughn movie.

8. Matt Damon - Never been a fan. No opinion.

Adam Sandler was not funny on SNL. There were some really funny people on there and yet Sandler was the one who was able to leave and have a movie career, still not funny or interesting.
