Texas Tech suspended women's basketball player Amber Battle for the month of November for her involvement in an altercation with former football player Nigel Bethel, the school announced Friday.

Battle and Bethel reportedly got in a fight during a pickup basketball game on Tech's campus. Bethel was dismissed from the football program last week, with the school saying "Texas Tech Athletics does not tolerate violence against women." Bethel also faces felony assault charges because of the incident.

"Texas Tech Athletics does not tolerate violence against women."

But it tolerates violence against men (whether this or other incidents)? Strange wording.

I’ll say this about Battle, she made one of the best apologies I’ve seen.

Battle apologized for her role in the incident... “I initiated the first contact and I take full responsibility for my actions”

So, a man may not even defend himself against an attack by a large female athlete?

When I was a boy, the saying was, “A gentleman does not strike a lady.”

She should. She has most likely ruined that guy’s life.

Nigel: ““Trouble always seems to find me ... ”

He: 5’9” Freshman cornerback
She” 5’9” Guard

He broke a bone in her face.
What did she do?

When I was a boy, the saying was, “A gentleman does not strike a lady.”

Exactly what my Dad taught me.

However, he also pointed out that a female who hit you without due provocation was no lady.

I was raised believing that too, but the current state of events have caused me to change at least my defensive response to a woman's attack. If the woman is the initiator of violence against me or mine, and they are armed or "ganging/packing up", my response will be the same as if it were an unprovoked attack by a male or males.

- One on one? No holds barred in defense of personal safety...
- Packing up or armed? Response in kind, no rules...

As I tell my kids: What you have is not yours if you can't defend it, and that includes your life...

This is the only other info I’ve been able to find regarding this altercation:

http://blacksportsonline.com/home/2014/06/texas-tech-cb-accused-of-punching-female-bball-player-breaking-her-nose/

It was her nose that was broken. What started this fight, I don’t know. As far as I can see, he seems to be a nice guy.

"When I was a boy, the saying was, “A gentleman does not strike a lady.”

That remains a truism, but from the sounds of things, there were no gentlemen or ladies involved.

Let me see if I got this right, Battle admits she swung first, Bethel hands her butt to her and he is charged with a felony assault charge, she sits out a month of basketball. That about sum it up?

Evil is good, and good is evil. Welcome to the beginning of the end.

“During a pickup basketball game on June 28, I was involved in an incident with Texas Tech
football player Nigel Bethel,” Battle said in a statement. “I initiated the
first contact and I take full responsibility for my actions. I want to take this
time to apologize to Nigel, the Texas Tech community, my teammates, coaches and fans.
Nothing I can say can truly repair the harm I have already caused. I did not represent the
Double T like I am supposed to and I promise to hold myself to a higher standard from here on.”

Bethel hasn’t been charged as of today.

Aggravated assault is a second-degree felony, which carries a punishment that
includes a prison sentence between two to 20 years.

From the Lubbock Paper earlier today.

nothing about this makes sense

she admitted she hit first and it’s her fault

That charge will likely be thrown out if she testifies that way.

I have lost any respect I had for Texas Tech

not charged and if she sticks to her apology he won’t lose a court case.

But he has already been punished.

So, a man may not even defend himself against an attack by a large female athlete?

But with a punch to the face? A solid shot to the solar plexus is very effective in stopping an attack and barely leaves a mark.

A gentleman does not strike a lady, but since neither behavior fit those descriptions...
