A San Rafael real estate attorney with a passion for felines left the bulk of his $1 million estate to the Marin Humane Society for the care of cats.
When 63-year-old Brian Russell Kirchoff of San Rafael died after suffering a heart attack in 2013, he left a six-page handwritten will delegating administration of his estate to county probate officials.
Following the sale of his Alpine Street home, along with his Porsche and other assets, and payment of all debts, the document says that "any cash proceeds left shall be donated to the Marin Humane Society for the express benefit and use of their cat fund for the benefit of all the cats which come into their care."

I think this is great, more people with no relatives should do the same -- animals can't help themselves as humans can.
He is saving the lives of many innocent cats this way, a nice legacy.

$750,000 salary to administrator, $50K for cats

“Dogs are jealous.”
Well, I am sure — or at least hope — that there are people donating for the care of dogs, too.
I personally like them both.
I think people with no relatives should consider donating to the care of cats and/or dogs. A lot of people are donating to many worthwhile causes, but not many realize how much good their money can do for animals who are indeed at the mercy of humans.

I certainly hope not... He was a lawyer and one would hope he researched the shelter to which he was donating his money.

I hope the fortune actually goes to the care of cats, rather than for a pittance plus the personal enrichment of some King or Queen of cats.

I’d not underestimate the ability of humans to play games that would baffle any cat.

Anyone who has observed the spectacle of relatives after a death knows how badly some people behave--one of my aunts arrived at my mother's house after she was found dead, and she took the considerable cash my mother had stashed and my (long dead) father's wedding ring.
At least animals won't conduct themselves this way.

Cats will at least wait a couple days before they start eating you. :)

Humane societies don’t have a very good track record when it comes to saving animals. Most of the independent dog and cat rescue groups obtain their animals from the local humane societies who are prepared to euthanize them.......
