Ed Nelson, a prolific actor who became a familiar face to American television audiences over 40 years, notably as a star of the prime-time soap opera "Peyton Place," died on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. He was 85.

Asta Hansen, a daughter-in-law, confirmed the death.

Handsome at six feet tall, Mr. Nelson had a prominent role on "Peyton Place" as Michael Rossi, a New York doctor who sets up practice in the fictional town of the show’s title and is quickly caught up in its romantic intrigues. The show, which ran from 1964 to 1969 on ABC, was widely regarded as the first prime-time soap opera, though it was filmed rather than taped, as most daytime soaps were.

Apparently, he had left the Monroe area, or maybe he had two residences, one there in Sterlington and the other in Greensboro, NC.

I remember him from several of the old black & white westerns from the 50’s and 60’s. He was 6 episodes of Gunsmoke.

Well, I'm a newbie at FR so I really don't know. I forget that younger people have their own movies stars. It just bothers me that four have died! It's supposed to be three. My mom always said that.

I once met Ed Nelson in Jacksonville, NC, sometime in the mid-sixties. When he was in the Navy, he was stationed at nearby Camp Lejeune and became friends with the family of one of my good friends. After he became a star, he was in the area and came to visit and I had the opportunity to meet him. I remember how good looking he was and how gracious he was to two starstruck teenage girls.
