Ferrari Sells for $38-Million at Auction, Breaking World Record
The Globe and Mail ^

A red 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta, which was once involved in a fatal accident, has set the world record for a car sold at auction, going for $38.1 million at a sale in California, auction house Bonhams said.

The price offered on Thursday by a bidder whose identity was not disclosed surpassed the $30 million (all figures U.S.) paid last year for a 1954 Mercedes Benz W196 race car, also sold by Bonhams, the auctioneers said in a press release.

“We’ve always maintained that we would exceed the current world record and that the car would bring between $30-$40-million and today the GTO did just that,” Robert Brooks, chairman of Bonhams, said in a statement.

I don’t know about that one, but we use them on gasoline engines, too in ND, MY, MN....not to mention the Canadians. Makes starting so much easier (and easier on the engine) at -30F.

I worked at Hughs Aircraft for a bit in 1969-72. Very close by was TRACOR, engine builder for many Can-Am teams. We often could hear them dyno testing at night. What a sound.

Nice car. So nice, in fact, that Pontiac copied the “GTO” name for a hopped-up family sedan.

Interesting read here: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/gto-vs-gto-road-test

Have you checked out the aluminum body daytonas built recently? I checked one out a few years ago at the Mitty race at road Atlanta. The car was bare metal and the workmanship was second to none.Almost a shame to paint it because it was so beautiful.

That was called the Guerney bubble because Dan Guerney needed the headroom when he wore the ass off Ferrari at Lemans.

You be surprised at how easy that job is, relatively speaking. The 458 Italia is even easier, as you simply drop the rear cradle out with the gearbox and replace the clutch that way. 2-3 hour job. Faster than most front wheel drive cars....but it’s the hourly labor rate that’ll kill ya with a Ferrari. :)

I still get the boundaries of Culver City and Venice messed up.

Yeah, ate at Dinahs a few times. Don't recall joe petrillias. Our favorite lunch place while working at Hughes was Tito's Tacos.

Went to Orville Wright JHS up the hill, and Westchester HS

Buddy of mine has been building a Daytona Coupe replica in Oregon for years now, stalled for funds. I rag him on it, but he says he has too much money into it to sell.
