Need Ideas. First Time Alone for Thanksgiving in Many Years, Where to Go?
08.18.14 | chickensoup

Posted on 08/18/2014 5:16:06 PM PDT by Chickensoup

After years and years of hosting Thanksgiving for friends and family, I am on my own this year. My friends are either overseas or have moved out of the area, or have moved to live near their children, and my children are scattered. I have no family. So I am on my own.

I am looking for ideas for something to do on Thanksgiving, some place to go. I am considering Montreal, Asheville, etc. I live in the Northeast, and would have about 2K to spend. I am not fond of large cities, would love to do something fun, and something that would not be considered unusual when done alone. I also realize the issue of how difficult Thanksgiving travel is.

I have been wracking my brain for a couple of weeks. Does anyone one have any ideas? I could use some help here.

Thanks.

Your favorite soup.

I haven’t been to Plymouth, but if you are interested in that area, I can highly recommend Portsmouth NH as well as Newburyport and Salem MA. So much to see and great food.

Warm weather? Check out the Forgotten Coast of the Florida panhandle. My favorite place. But don’t tell anyone. I want it to stay forgotten!! If you know what I mean.

I see several posters beat me to the Williamsburg idea. I just went there alone myself a few days ago. Even though I’ve been there umpteen million times I never get tired of it.

I’m a single woman, a scardey cat, and I feel safe wandering around alone there. They have ghost tours in the evenings.

If you like to eat, you’ll love Williamsburg.

I am from Iceland.

Ha! Then you must love my suggestion. Maybe it's time for you to reconnect with your roots.

Actually bookings for dinners are already happening. Air ticket bookings happen shortly too. Thanksgiving is big.

I don't go anywhere for Thanksgiving. I stay home and cook dinner for my sons who come to visit. Chickensoup was the one looking for suggestions. If I was going to be alone on Thanksgiving, instead of going anywhere, I'd probably cook light for myself...like a hot turkey sandwich with gravy, along with mashed potatoes and a vegetable. But if I got adventurous, and decided to travel on the holiday, I could see myself doing something with an historical atmosphere, like the places I recommended to Chickensoup.

By the way, I live in one of the armpits of the world...Rome, NY. We don't have any fancy restaurants around here, just the usual fast-food places, a Denny's, an Applebees, and a Moe's. Now if you're into Italian food and pizza for Thanksgiving dinner, then this place is for you.

Just thinking, though, why do you have to go anywhere far away? Isn’t there just a really nice restaurant in your area that does a special Thanksgiving dinner? Maybe someplace that wouldn’t normally be in your budget, but you can splurge on it?

I just want to have a different time.

You aren’t going to be able to dodge God, so you might as well go somewhere that you can see as much of God’s beauty as possible.

What gives here? Even Christ took retreats away alone from things. The Disciples likewise he took away for needed rest. The mind, body, and soul, at times needs rest from the task at hand. Gathering from the post she gives substantial times helping others.

If you’re renting a house, this has been a favorite of ours:

There’s another overlooking Silver Lake Harbor with parking on Howard Street behind that is great, but it’s gotten very popular and therefore expensive. Too bad, loved that one, even if it was purple, lol.

You can try the Gatlinburg & Pigeon Forge Ternnessee area. Summer time it’s crowded but late fall it’s pretty much easier to get around. There is nearby Dollywood which IIRC opens back up for it’s Christmas lights festivals on Thanksgiving or that weekend.

There is a thermal spa in Iceland called The Blue Lagoon that looks amazing.
